Gift Card Balance Says Zero Dollars????

I received a Sephora gift card as a birthday gift and recently tried to use it at a Sephora. I literally took my time and walked around the store in search of a few products that I needed only to be told that my gift card had a balance of $0. Super embarrasing... fortunately for me, I did not come empty handed and handed over my credit card for payment processing. 

 

Nonetheless, I attempted to reach out to customer service and was told that I should reach out to the individual who gifted me the card so that they could look into it. Who does that? I decided to do a quick google search and surprise surprise... this has been an ongoing issue for quite some time. What is the remedy for this? I don't think it's fair that my friend's hard earned $100 goes to waste over some known Sephora gift card issue.
