Expired foundations sold by Sephora

I ordered the Sephora Teint Infusion foundation in Shade 23 and it arrived today. I was very thrown off by the packaging being scuffed up, so I went to CheckCosmetics to see how old this item is. The batch code on my foundation is 4251B and was produced on September 8, 2014. It is expired. This is disgusting Sephora! Please be careful when you are buying things from the sale page because you never know if Sephora is selling you old, expired makeup!

Re: Expired foundations sold by Sephora

Hi @ricebunny sorry to hear that! If you're unsatisfied with the foundation you received, please feel free to mail it back for a refund, or contact your local store for more information on their returns policy. If you need any further assistance, you can always PM me too!

Re: Expired foundations sold by Sephora

I don't think the product being 3.5 years old makes it "disgusting" and I think "disgusting" is a very emotionally charged word.  Whether you paid full price or got it on sale, I believe you should be getting a good product.  If the item was about to go bad, it is ok to sell it at a sale price only if that information is disclosed to the buyer.

That being said, I don't think 3.5 year old foundation is inherently bad product.  Products do separate, but you can usually shake them back up and they're fine.  Look at any given nail polish.  They separate after being undisturbed for a few months, but you shake them up and they're as good as new again.

I understand you're putting it on your face and you're concerned about what you put on your face.  However, since the bottle has been sealed I believe it is fine.  To the best of my knowledge, there's no active ingredient in this product like there is in sunscreen, so you don't have to worry about a shelf life.

If you're convinced there's really some kind of chemical change that occurs in this product after 3.5 years, please explain it to us so we can be better informed.

Re: Expired foundations sold by Sephora

Shelf life does matter! I wouldn't use expired product on my face, you have no idea what chemical reaction going in this bottle. And even you paid half price for it, you just gave your money for expired product, which is basically....trash? If I would in your situation I would just return it, you can try to contact customer service about that issue@

Re: Expired foundations sold by Sephora

The shelf life does in fact matter. Shelf life is how long a product is safe for use or consumption, even if its unopened, this is because the individual ingredients themselves can breakdown or separate due to age. This is different from the use by date, which is the 12M your seeing. While they might not be harmful, it can definitely affect the use of the product. So the product might be good for 3 years unopened, but once open consumed within 1 year. Ive gotten a few products that were old, and considered expired. I just returned it to Sephora and they gave me my money back. I think this is why aps that tell you how old a product is are super popular now. I always check after, or before I buy depending on the return policy.

Re: Expired foundations sold by Sephora

@ricebunny To be fair, "the shelf life" since when....since its been oxidized? I've never heard of the website your referencing. How could they possibly know when Sephora, or any other brand manufactured their product? Then my next point, you purchased it more then 50% off. I'm sorry if you feel the bottle being scuffed makes it disgusting. Maybe its a discontinued product?

Re: Expired foundations sold by Sephora

I understand I got it for less than 50% off, but this is chemicals. They do not last forever, all chemicals have a half-life and the resulting chemicals from the breakdown may not be cosmetically safe. I found out about this website after hearing about the expired makeup being sold at Harris Teeters. I am disgusted as I had thought Sephora would hold themselves accountable and not sell customers something from 3.5 years ago. This is worse than a grocery store - at least grocery stores clear out products before they expire and dispose of them at their expiry date. 😷🤢

@ricebunny you missed one of my points. Do you see the below photo? The lid with the number 12 in it? That means once the product has been open, aka oxidized (exposed to air) it is only good for that period of time. Check your bottle. When the product was made is irrelevant. It was sealed and not exposed to air.

Unfortunetly, the bottle doesn’t have that icon on it so I can’t definitely say I can use it without potentially damaging my skin.
