@broadwayraveI would recommend first using a clarifying shampoo. When your curls become dull and lifeless its usually a sign of buildup. DEVACURL - Buildup Buster™ Micellar Water Cleansing SerumAfter you have removed the build up, you may find that is enough for your curls to spring back to life or you can continue on the Deva Curl path with a regime for your hair type.

I used to watch my cousin all of the time when I was a teenager, my cousin has straight thick hair and wanted Shirley Temple curls. So I used to curl her hair with those foam curlers so I wouldn't damage her hair with heat. I would put them in her hair while her hair was still damp, she would sleep with them in and I took them out in the morning. She had perfect curls every time.

@NovoKodaOkay girl.....lets talk hair. Curly hair is a lot more finicky then straight hair. Below is a horrible image of what I'm trying to describe....the "curl" isn't curly at all but just imagine. Straight Vs. Curly Hair - When we apply conditioners, deep treatments, masks to straight hair you get more or less even penetration of product; it's a smooth cuticle with no curves preventing absorbtion ☆Please imagine this is actually curly hair☆ On curly hair you have bends and curves which makes it impossible to get full penetration of product. This is the reason those with curly hair are naturally on the more dry side.   So understanding WHY your hair is drier, is a good place to start. Curly clients usually stay away from silicones, unnecessary alchohols and sulfates as they add to dryness. I would take a look at the Deva Curl line that Sephora carries aswell as Olaplex No.3. It's a game changer for curls.

I'm going to start off by saying that I'm no expert either. I'm still working on finding what works for my hair as well. What you will find is that what works for one may not work for another due to the different types of hair/curls/texture/processing, etc. I have super fine hair but mine is wavy to curls. I have 2b/2c with some 3a hair along the neck. It's crazy. And my hair soaks up water so I can't moisturize much or it gets really weighted down. What I have found helpful is to use the microfiber towel but not to be rough with your hair. Like the other reply said, it messes with the cuticle and will cause frizz. I use a diffuser religiously. My hair dries after about an hour or so but I really like how much more controlled it is when I diffuse it. You need products that are silicone free. Naturallycurly.com is a great resource. I use DivaCurl products and Redken products right now. I've tried some of Miss Jessie's line but so far that has been too heavy for my hair. I'm really liking the Redken Curvaceous and Ringlet right now. Shea Moisture is pretty good too. You just have to start getting some products and experiment. It's definitely a marathon, not a sprint. It can take a while to get your hair to the point you love it but it is well worth it. Talk to a salon expert in curly hair to help you get started. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Hi @CasualPotato,   I like to use the BUMBLE AND BUMBLE - Bb. Curl (Style) Defining Creme and the BUMBLE AND BUMBLE - Bb. Curl (Style) Anti-Humidity Gel-Oil to create defined curls. The gel does cause the curls to have a crunchiness to it but to soften the curls I use a hair serum like the KIEHL'S SINCE 1851- Silk Groom Serum when the gel has dried.    I hope this helps!    Best Wishes,   Janean

It's a process and takes more time to deal with thick hair.  I have a lot of hair and I like to spray bumble and bumble surf spray into my damp hair.  I start making twist in sections all over my head and then take a blow dryer to dry the twist.  After that when I take the twist out I have wavy hair. The easier way to go is to create waves with a flat iron or a curling iron. Desi Perkins on youtube has videos on how to create waves in your hair.

I haven't had a perm since the 80's and am more than a little nervous.   What products should I stock up on to make sure my hair stays hydrated that won't weigh it down? My hair is also color treated...  Assume I own nothing.  What regimen would you recommend? Thanks!G

Are you transitioning from something like a relaxer perm or frequent straightening? 15 years ago I started my transition from relaxed to natural, without cutting off all my relaxed hair. If you’re transitioning, I highly recommend keeping your hair in twists or braids (not super tight braids, otherwise you’ll cause breakage) as much as possible until you’re comfortable enough with your regrowth length to cut off all your straight ends. That’ll help keep breakage and split ends to a minimum.  When you wash your hair, does it take a long time (hours) to air dry, or does it dry very quickly? Or is your hair a mix of both those things? Mine’s a mix. The hair all around my face and in 2 small patches elsewhere is so high porosity, it’s dry before I step out of the shower (after washing my hair). But my rear crown is so low porosity, it takes a full 24 hours to air dry. Everywhere else is medium porosity. Knowing this about your hair will help you figure out what kinds of products to use. For instance, I can’t use humectants—such as any products containing honey—all over my head because they make most of my coils tangle into tiny knots, and they fry my high porosity areas (they allow moisture to leave my already dry hair).  For reference, I’m 4a everywhere except 2 weird little patches of 3c. I currently use OGX Nourishing Coconut Milk shampoo, but I’m also hunting around for a new shampoo. My conditioner is SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine. And the only product I use after that nowadays is Ouidad Curl Quencher cream. My hair loves coconut oil and silk protein in products, and whatever witchcraft is in that Ouidad cream.
