Thanks @makeitup305! I've heard of them. One stylist (not a curly hair specialist) recommended the wet brush for tangles and I got it. I think it helps with making curl clumps. I use the brush to curl hair around my finger into a ringlet if it is a funky and not a smooth wave. I wonder if the denman would make a difference or not. Something to consider as I'm experimenting. I appreciate you thinking of me and letting me know!

@OliviaTallent Products that contain oils and/or butters can build up on your hair, as can dry shampoo if you use it. If you have low porosity hair, you'll suffer from more buildup than other types. Hard water is also a problem (you'll need a chelating shampoo to help with that).  Any shampoo marked "clarifying" will do the trick, but I recommend OGX Coconut Water Shampoo. It has an ingredient that will remove CG-friendly but non-water-soluble polymers. Since clarifying tends to dry out hair, make sure to follow up with a deep conditioner! Once every 3-4 weeks should suffice.

My all time favourite hair care brand is Shea Moisture ♡ My favourite line of theirs is the Manuka Honey and Yogurt one, it leaves my hair so soft and touchable, although the Coconut and Hibiscus is also a very nice one. I found my hair loves anything Shea Moisture while it did not like Davines or DevaCurl, and the added bonus is Shea moisture is way cheaper and more ethical. I just wash it, condition it then add a tiny bit of product to it (usually a curl cream or gel). sometimes if I have a few hours I plop it, however I can wash, scrunch, and go with this routine if I have to and it is super simple.

@SausalitoGal THEY DID? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I just pulled it out of my crazy, overflowing bin of deluxe size styling products the other day, and I loved what it did for me. &$%#^@! My hair is more of a 2 than a 3, so I'm not sure that I'll be the most help. For definition and frizz-fighting, I've liked the Ouidad Heat & Humidity Gel (regular hold, not strong). I plan to try some of their other products, like the VitalCurl mousse and PlayCurl foam. I also like the DevaCurl line, but the products I use are probably too light for you!

I like to mix B Leave In and Curls in a Bottle by Curl Junkie with water in my hands and apply it to soaking wet hair. And by soaking wet I mean dripping wet. I use a kind of modified praying hands and then scrunch the water out. I have low porosity hair so I find applying my products to super wet hair helps keep moisture in.

It sounds like you had the same problem as I did! I love my hair long and thought regular layers made it look wayyyy to poofy. The best hair cut I ever got was getting inverted layers, it is the same as traditional layers but they are underneath instead. Because the layers were underneath the ends didn’t pop out making a poofy huge mess in my hair. I think you would really love this look! Also a plus it works with most hair lengths, so you can keep your hair at whatever length you prefer!

@celticfire99 I can think of a few questions: Have you changed your products at all, or just the time you wash your hair? Is your scalp normally dry or oily? Did your routine change coincide with the season changing, or has this been happening before winter started? Do you ever clarify your hair? There are so many potential culprits: product buildup, over-washing, over-conditioning, overly moisturizing or heavy products, too hot shower, hormones, stress...the list goes on!  I wash my hair at night too, and to combat oiliness I sleep in a loose topknot, two side buns, or a sleep cap to prevent oil from traveling down the roots, use a satin pillowcase and wash it frequently, and apply a lightweight conditioner nowhere near the scalp.

@bksam How curly is your hair? I have a mix of loose waves, tight waves, and occasional ringlets on the innermost sections. I've had more success with lightweight foams than mousse. Ouidad PlayCurl Curl Amplifying Foam and DevaCurl Frizz-Free Volumizing Foam are my two favorites. That said, if we have completely different hair types, my recommendations might not be best for you. Hope this helps!

My waves are rather temperamental, and there’s sadly no one routine or set of products that consistently makes them look their best. What’s been working for me recently: DevaCurl Delight shampoo and conditioner, Ouidad Heat & Humidity gel on soaking wet hair, plopping my hair in my Curly Tee Towel for 5-10 minutes, diffusing until about 75% dry. I shower in the evening because I’m up so early for work, and right now that routine seems to be giving me the best hair the next morning. If I need to spruce it up a bit in the morning, I’ll dampen it and scrunch some DevaCurl Wave Maker into it.

i am also a teen with curly hair! it is all about learning about your hair and it takes time learning what type and brand of products work best. Devacurl is great and works amazing, but for me it is a little expensive and my hair doesn’t look much different with other cheaper and more standard shampoo/conditioners. currently i am using the ogx normal coconut shampoo/conditioner pair and my curl outcomes is about the same. however i do find devacurl better when detangling compared to ogx. products you apply after washing is really important as well, devacurl, sheamoisture, mixed chicks, are all really goods brands i recommend but at the same time it is all about experimenting with products and wash times. any particular questions just dm me!

@Gabriela26 I've found sometimes if I moisturize too much, my finer hairs especially will look wispy and flyaway. It'll feel super soft, but maybe needs something to build up the strand. Some of your curls may be naturally looser than others, but some could also have lost their spring. -That can be a sign of needing protein. Or of needing clarifying to get what's weighing down the hair out (>>Moroccan Oil products often have ingred. that call for a sulfate shampoo). -- Does your conditioner contain protein (amino acids, keratin)? And with a dry scalp, have you found the tea tree oil at all drying? Could it be adding to the dryness?

CGM becoming too complicated? Go back to the basics!

This post is for anyone who is getting overwhelmed by the Curly Girl Method (CGM). The CGM method, originally introduced to us by Lorraine Massey, helped us to simplify our curly hair routines by teaching us how to properly take care of our curly hair. Due to many of us having unpleasant experiences with our curly hair we often disliked our hair for various reasons, one of them being it was too much to handle and became a burdensome chore. Then we discovered the lovely CGM by Lorraine Massey and it was the answer to our curl hair problems, or so we thought. Instead of hating our hair we were taught how to properly moisturize and care for it with the right products, making us love our curls and embrace them. Recently, the CGM has become extremely popular. The CGM is everywhere - on our YouTube, Instagram and Facebook feeds, articles on various vlogs, and entire websites dedicated to the CGM and curly hair life. However, it's popularity inadvertently caused the CGM to become way more complicated than originally described. Instead of being about simplicity it turned into a complicated array of 'how to's' and 'what not to do's.' It spawned entire sub sections of groups within the CGM community. While these groups are wonderful, encouraging and very informative, they often present a complicated array of issues, routines, etc... . This causes people to stress over a lot of curly hair stuff, for example protein vs moisture. I've seen plenty of people overly stressed about 'protein overload' or 'moisture overload,' causing them to do various hair treatments (costing $$$) and ultimately getting overwhelmed and upset that their hair did not turn out perfect or it even 'ruined' their hair. Another example would be humectants and when to use or not use them. I've seen a ton of complications arise from this, resulting in extreme amounts of money spent on the 'perfect products.' Another example is the debate to wash or not to wash our hair. I've seen girls shamed b/c they wash their hair instead of only co washing or using conditioner to wash their hair every single time. There are many more things I can point out and say but the purpose of my post is to encourage positivity and simplicity so I will not go into any more detail. BTW, balancing out protein and moisture can be important but it is also a fairly simple thing to do and should not be made complicated. The same with humectants, it's easy to either use them or not. Simple, right? YES. It is that simple. In all this curly hair chaos, always remember that the CGM was meant to simplify curly hair routines with the use of healthy hair products and to get rid of all the complicated stuff, therefore embracing our curls instead of our curls becoming a chore. I, myself, got too wrapped up in complicated stuff, buying too many products, switching routines constantly, and basically making the CGM a complicated and tiresome task. I ended up hating my hair all over again! This method is meant for us to love and embrace our curls, not to go back to hating our curls. So I simplified everything, as I did in the beginning, and focused on the most important parts. I keep my curls moisturized and I use gel to make a gel cast. I also do weekly deep conditioning treatments and it has done wonders for my curls! The Curly Girl Method, in the most simplest terms, is to take out all the harsh ingredients in your hair products, use lots of conditioner and learn to use gel and make a gel cast. One of the most important steps in the CGM is squish to condish, it really does wonders for your hair. I'm surprised that squish to condish is hardly mentioned anymore in the CGM community. Maybe it has been forgotten about in all the rules and chaos. I am in no way, shape or form bashing anyone that likes to go into depth with their CGM routine, or that loves products, or switches up their routines a lot, etc. If this makes you happy and you're having a great time, then that's awesome and keep it up! After all, the point is to love your curly hair and everything that comes with it.I am telling you of my experience in hopes that some curly girls do not get overwhelmed and end up hating their curls all over again. If this post can help just one curly girl learn to love her curls again then it was worth it. And for all you beautiful wavy girls this is for you, too!
