Help w curls !

When I was younger my hair was full of curls. As I grew up I “lost” the curls but my hair isn’t straight. It has like this weird wave pattern where some parts are wavy while others are semi wavy. 
I get told that I have thin hair but that I have a lot of it so it makes my hair heavy. Is that why I lost those curls I once had?? Is there anything I can use to make them appear again?? Maybe a perm?? 
If you know anything please let me know.
