Curly Girl Method?

Hi all, I have 2a-2b hair (I think) and I am interested in trying out the curly girl method. I canโ€™t seem to find a good enough understanding of it though to get started. I recently purchased briogeo products to start off with a silicone, paraben, and no harsh sulfate base. Does anyone have styling mousse or other product recommendations? And can someone explain the curly girl method to me that understands it? This is my hair.

RE: Curly Girl Method?

Itโ€™s a TON of trial and error and can be SUPER overwhelming because thereโ€™s soooo many products. A few brand recommendations though: Shea moisture, Miss Jessieโ€™s, mixed chicks, and kinky curl! There all target/drug store brands but I have tried EVERY brand you could ever possible imagine. And these have worked best for me! AVEDA also has some amazing curl enhancing products that can encourage your curls to curl more if thatโ€™s the look your going for. MY HOLY GRAIL products have been: Jelly Soft curls by miss Jessieโ€™s, Mixed chicks leave-in conditioner, Shea moisture coconut and hibiscus curl and style milk, Shea moisture Coconut and Hibiscus curl enhancing smoothie, and any Shea Moisture โ€œrepair and restoreโ€ products! They also make the BEST hair mask Iโ€™ve ever used. My BEST Tips: Do NOT use towels to dry your hair, get a diffuser or air dry, RAKE your leave-in and SCRUNCH your styling products, use a light gel, invest in a WET brush comb or Pic instead of a normal brush, DEEP CONDITION, and make sure you clean your scalp to keep from product buildup! Also with Fine curls make sure you use lighter products to keep your curls from falling out!

Your curls look beautiful @Rahbanyc. I feel like I am always tweaking  my routine. However you styled your hair the day that you took that photo, that is exactly what you should do.

RE: Re: Curly Girl Method?

Thatโ€™s just after a normal shampoo and condition. I just let my hair air dry which I plan to continue. Iโ€™m just trying to figure out whatโ€™s best for my hair since my mom has straighter hair and my dad has short hair so I was never really taught what to do with my curls. I figured out myself not to tear a brush through it and Iโ€™m just trying to continue the positive steps and educate myself so that my hair stays happy and healthy โ˜บ๏ธ I appreciate your feedback and Iโ€™m glad that Iโ€™m not far off from healthy looking hair

Re: Curly Girl Method?

@Rahbanyc I bought the Curly Girl book by Lorraine Massey and found it to be very insightful.  IDK how you learn best, but it might be a good place to start ๐Ÿ™‚  Good luck!

RE: Re: Curly Girl Method?

Thank you for the recommendation!

RE: Curly Girl Method?

hi, i started the curly girl method in august 2019! it was a little confusing at the start and i didnโ€™t really follow the rules. haha. i would wash my hair every morning and do a wash n go EVERY DAY! donโ€™t do that, itโ€™s very time consuming. i recommend the SheaMoisture Shampoo and conditioner, I also use the Aveda Curly Cowash on days that i donโ€™t really need a shampoo. i find it hard to find creams and leave ins that i like but I LOVE Avedas Brilliant Retexturing gel. So, I could go and explain a lot of it to you, or i could tell you what my friend told me. Go watch ManesbyMell on youtube. Literally. Binge watch everythig. thatโ€™s whatโ€™s i did and iโ€™m very proud of my hair now. Just please donโ€™t use devacurl products right now. your hair is beautiful and i used it religiously for 7 months and my hair lost its curl and i was starting to lose hair. Thereโ€™s been lots of problems with lots of people with their products. Iโ€™m not trying to say anything bad about that company, i just donโ€™t want you to get your beautiful all messed up. ๐Ÿ’•

RE: Curly Girl Method?

I really appreciate your response! I saw the same reaction about DevaCurl from other users as well. Currently I started to use Briogeo because itโ€™s a cleaner shampoo and conditioner. The banana one. Iโ€™ve only used it twice now so I donโ€™t have enough experience for an opinion yet besides that my hair feels really soft compared to my previous wash routine. I will definitely look into the YouTube channel you recommended! Thanks!
