Which stylist should I trust to bleach my hair?

Re: Which stylist should I trust to bleach my hair?

@gangsta Hi. I'm a hair stylist. Let's talk about a few things...

Whether your roots are a level 5 or a level 7..this is irrelevant.

Salon B should be taken out of the equation period. I'm going to be very honest with you. Us hairstylists have closed facebook groups dedicated to helping eachother out and bouncing ideas off one another - for example, what to do when a client insists on going Platinum but their hair is too compromised.

We take our jobs very seriously. Your head is our walking canvas, our walking billboard. So if we say to you, i'm sorry but your hair is just not healthy enough right now - it's because it's the truth. You are a walking advertisement for our work.

So, you don't like that answer. Enter salon B. They tell you they can do what Salon A can't. You need to question the motives of salon B. We will never turn away a client unless it's in THEIR best interest.

PS - pick up Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector Pre-Shampoo Hair Repair Treatment 3.3 oz / 100 mL . Kevin Murphy is not going to fix your damaged hair, this will.

@gangsta You don't think purple shampoo should be advised? The only reason I wouldnt advise a client to use purple shampoo is if their hair is so damaged and porous that its going to grab the violet pigement and tint the hair purple.

I'm going to tell you to have conversations with your stylist. You are not the professional. Nothing irks me more then when clients think they know better.

You have contradicted yourself a few times. If both stylists think your hair is healthy, and so do you - why are any of you concerned about it breaking off?

Sometimes what your hair goals are and what is achievable are two seperate things. I don't know you and have never seen your hair. The integrity of clients hair is always the priority. Not everyone can be Platinum.

i didn’t say that purple shampoo shouldn’t be advised i said that it shouldn’t replace your regular shampoo and you have to interchange them because purple shampoo can be drying according to my regular stylist. I use purple shampoo but i also use a moisture shampoo on my other shampoo days. I think you’re misunderstanding what i’m saying. Also, there’s some stylists who aren’t good at doing hair and i’ve had friends who have had their hair fried by stylists who weren’t experienced so i’m going to be critical. i feel like you’re taking what i’m saying to heart and no offense but i believe you need to be a little less subjective and i don’t appreciate the judgement towards me because i want a certain hair color.

Re: Which stylist should I trust to bleach my hair?

First, you have to understand that everyone is trying to sell you something. A hairstylist will never tell you that they are bad at their job but will always say they are better that other person

I don't know where you're getting these star ratings but they are irrelevant to the conversation as long as the reviews are good. People will give low ratings just for bad customer service from checkout which has no reflection on the actual work done by the stylist. You should always ask a stylist if they have pictures or an instagram to see their work.

Second, as I understand it, you have bleached/lightened your hair many times. Your first stylist is right. Listen to your stylist, especially if you have seen them frequently. They know what they have done to your hair better than you and better than that second stylist. Bleaching your hair is essentially damaging your hair and you have to give your hair a break and let it grow out. Bleaching makes your hair brittle and weak. Good stylists will refuse to do your hair.

REMEMBER, IT'S BLEACH! It's a chemical process that unnaturally and permanently changes your hair.

RE: Re: Which stylist should I trust to bleach my hair?

do you think the second stylist was a bad stylist? i was honestly surprised when she said i could go platinum. she was trying really hard to get me to switch to her salon and it made me really uncomfortable and it felt unprofessional of her to bash my stylist.

Re: RE: Re: Which stylist should I trust to bleach my hair?

She is likely trying to sell to you. I assume that you're paying for a $150+ service.

Think about it like this:

Stylist 1 is someone who has worked with your hair multiple times, has seen the results of her work on you and how well it works. She refuses to continue treating your hair or else it will fall out. She is taking your hair's health and your dignity into consideration despite the fact that she is losing immediate business.

Stylist 2 has just met you for the first time and has no idea what your hair is like naturally over a period of time. She does not know you or your hair and is trying to get a new regular customer. Unless, she knows her stuff, especially the science and biology of hair, who listens vigilantly to your hair history, than I would not go to her until you have healthier hair. She also bashes your current stylist to the point that you felt uncomfortable. Imagine going to her repeatedly and having awkward conversations.

It is almost like asking for advice between your mom who has known you since birth, who knows your whole medical history, your likes and dislikes and a complete stranger who just met you. It is better to still have your hair than not have it all.

RE: Re: RE: Re: Which stylist should I trust to bleach my hair?

you’re honestly 100% right. when i told her that my stylist said my hair would fall out if i went lighter she told me that my hair didn’t look damaged and that the salon can take me platinum. i was honestly alarmed that she wasn’t even concerned when i said that there’s a possibility of my hair falling off. Like i don’t understand how some stylists would risk getting a malpractice lawsuit just to make a quick buck. I assumed at the time that I would be able to go platinum by how confident she was but now that i think about it she didn’t seem knowledgeable about hair given that she told me i could replace my regular shampoo with purple shampoo. my current stylist seems to know way more about the chemistry of hair because the salon specializes in very complicated fashion colors. She didn’t even seem like a hairstylist she was like an aggressive salesman trying to push products and treatments down my throat. my current stylist acts like a hair stylist and doesn’t try to make as much money as she can off of me and treats me like a friend and not a customer. and the reason why i mentioned the reviews is because the second stylists salon has a lot of bad reviews by people for botched cuts and being overcharged. the salon of the second stylist was empty on a sunday besides one client i noticed.

Re: Which stylist should I trust to bleach my hair?

To go Platinum you need to get up to a level 10-11. Put it this way, even with the most expensive product, the best bleach, and Olaplex, with great hair you will only be able to lift 4 levels. Lightening the root isn't that big of a task because that hair is unprocessed, it's the base that is the challenge. Do you have any photos so we can see where you are at?

It doesn't look like it is that far off from the goal, however a stylist will need to touch it and see how it responds to the chemicals. You may also be sent home with some aftercare. If you are in S. California I would probably check out: @Zackmesquit he is in Irvine, CA You want a "Platinum Expert" or "Blonde Expert" someone who will use premium products on you as well as find out what type of bonder they will use like Olaplex. Sometimes if you call the salon, and explain you are in a different state and ask if they know of anyone near by they recommend a friend etc... IDK where you're located but definitely go based on work produced rather than ratings on a salon. I got screwed that way too $800 later and my hair was still not where I wanted and had lines of demarkation everywhere.

RE: Re: RE: Re: Which stylist should I trust to bleach my hair?

it looks super light in the photo but it’s actually more of a level 7-8 blonde in person. i just don’t understand that the stylist said my hair was healthy yet she said my hair will fall out if i get it bleached again. the second stylist was extremely pushy and was trying to get me to switch to her salon and it made me uncomfortable because i just wanted to buy product. i also question her knowledge as a stylist because she thought my hair was dark blonde by looking at my roots and it’s naturally brown. also, she seemed really confident she could get me platinum but i am scared that they will be care less and melt my hair off because they just want money. like do you think they would legitimately properly take me platinum or just fry my hair for money? i’m also not comfortable getting my roots done every few months and prefer to get them done every 6 weeks.

Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: Which stylist should I trust to bleach my hair?

I updated my reply, forgot to mention to do a little test using your own hair, cut off a piece where you won't even see it.

Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: Which stylist should I trust to bleach my hair?

I'm not a stylist but based on my experience your hair will decide how far it wants to go once the product touches it. A Stylist who cares will use lower developer, 10 and just take their time but since time=money many want to jump right in and use the 40 which is fry city. It works so fast and doesn't leave any flex room for error. If you want to see for yourself you could buy the olaplex, blonde me bleach powder, + developer on Amazon although it's a lot of product or you can do a little cheap sallys test, and buy some L'oreal Quick blue bleach powder & developer for like $7. I'd then cut off a little pice like half the size of a dime. Then just watch it change color and rise off when the color you want is achieved. Don't over process or it will turn to gum.
