Olaplex 4 & 5 and Hair Loss

This is my personal experience/opinion & things I’ve done. I am not a doctor and you should always consult your GP before starting any medication.

Hello! I have had the same issue with Olaplex #4 & 5 that so many others are reporting regarding hair loss. There’s a group on Facebook that I’m in filled with horror stories. The Olaplex can cause a protein overload which can then lead to fungal infection on your scalp. If it’s felt itchy or burning, that’s why. I use ketoconozole shampoo, I take Viviscal daily (it’s oral Minoxidil) and I use Bondi Boost Intensive Spray for my scalp. I also use their Elixir hair oil. At the very least, you could use a clarifying shampoo. I haven’t had any bald spots, but I noticed my ponytail was much thinner from all the shedding. I’ve been only using 4 & 5 for 8 months, so it’s not caused by anything else. Make sure you don’t have a shellfish allergy before taking Viviscal (it has shark cartilage). And don’t take another vitamin that has iron while taking Viviscal. If you want to join the group, it’s called Olaplex and Hair Loss? Just say you read a review on Sephora 😉 Good luck to everyone struggling with this & remember: this is only temporary!

Re: Olaplex 4 & 5 and Hair Loss

I had hair loss from Olaplex too and agree with this. After a lot of exploration - clarifying shampoos, diet, silk pillowcases etc. - I found that Olaplex resulted in a fungal infection. I had bald spots and itchy head, and my hair was falling out from the roots. I didn't attribute it to Olaplex at first and after figuring out all this I went back to using it, and now my hair shedding is back. Luckily I now know what to do.

What works for me is:

1) Anti-fungal shampoo. I use Nizoral. It makes my hair texture not great so I alternate with a basic shampoo. Right now I'm using Aveeno Fresh Greens but I'm sure any basic shampoo will work, or just use Nizoral every time.

2) Drying hair after every wash. I used to let hair air dry but letting the roots stay wet makes the fungus thrive. So soon after every wash, I just flip my head upside down and dry my hair on low-medium heat, focusing on the roots, to stop the moisture from lingering.

3) Not stretching washes. Washing more keeps my scalp clean and happy.

That's it. Just ordered more Nizoral. I'm confident I'll get this thing back on track again, but Olaplex sucks and I'm not touching that stuff ever again.

This absolutely happened to me. Using 4 & 5 ruined my hair. Dry and brittle it broke off into a mullet.
