Help with shampoo and conditioner

My hair is very dry at the bottom but very oily at the top. I was wondering if there are any shampoos or conditioner to recommend because the ones I have are like bad. Please on budget.

to be honest with u i have the exact same problem and i use baby shampoo and i cleanse and wash my hair off 3 times  in one wash

Re: Help with shampoo and conditioner

My biggest is tip is how you’re washing your hair.

Focus on a section of your scalp at a time, go under the water as you’re massaging to get a good sud going. More importantly give a good scrub/massage, with fingertips never your nails, for at LEAST a few minutes. I think too many people don’t spend enough time washing. Just focus on getting your actual scalp clean and hair will get clean in the process.

Now if your hair is quite greasy, then shampoo twice BUT apply conditioner on your mid to ends, so the second round of shampoo isn’t stripping your hair. Wash. Then use a hair mask or conditioner, but not on your scalp. Leave it in for 5-10 minutes and rinse.

  • Use leave in conditioner after the shower
  • Some oil on your ends
  • You’d probably also benefit from a haircut and a bonding treatment. Redkin ABC is my fav (sold at ulta)
  • If you do all this, I promise it will help.
oh! And I have to share my fav shampoo ever because it’s slept on - Costco lol. It’s their big purple bottle with their name brand “Kirkland”.

Re: Help with shampoo and conditioner

Hello! I have the exact same issue with my hair, so perhaps I can help a little, especially because I am on a tight budget and I’ve tried a lot of different brands to try to combat this.

First off, definitely use a clarifying/detox shampoo at least once a week. Sometimes I do once a week but often I do twice a week. I have found most to be pretty good, including many you can find at the drug store. I currently have been using the OUAI Detox Clarifying Shampoo with Apple Cider Vinegar and I absolutely love it. It’s a little more pricy, but I got the mini and during a sale, and a little bit goes a long way.

For regular days, for “higher end” stuff I just recently decided, during a hair sale, to give OUAI Shampoo & Conditioner Duo for Medium Hair a try. Although Ouai’s shampoos and conditioners aren’t specified to be for an oily scalp, I read a lot of reviews and many people with this same issue loved them for that, while others with dryer hair felt that Ouai’s shampoo and conditioner stripped their hair too much. I find them to be a perfect balance.

One that I swear by that’s an affordable brand, not found at Sephora, is L’Oreal. They have a shampoo and conditioner line in a purple bottle that actually says “oily roots, dry ends” and that one is amazing!! The only reason I even switched to Ouai is because the L’Oreal one doesn’t specify if it’s colour safe and my hair was coloured recently. But overall I find it to be just as good as Ouai is, and leaves my hair smelling good, scalp less oily, and lengths & ends soft and moisturized.

I hope that helped a bit!

@thebaddie1

Kérastase Genesis Strengthening Shampoo for Normal to Oily Hair 16.9 oz / 500 mL or Bumble and bumble Mini Thickening Shampoo 2 oz/ 60 mL .

Also use a clarifying shampoo or scrub at least weekly.

I like Kérastase Energizing Scrub: Purifying Scrub for Oily Scalp 8.5 oz/ 250 mL , shu uemura Ashita Supreme Purifying Sea Salt Scalp Scrub 11.4 oz/ 325 g , OUAI Detox Clarifying Shampoo with Apple Cider Vinegar , or Bumble and bumble Sunday Clarifying Shampoo .

These are all fairly pricey. I have not found any "drugstore" brands  that work as well for me. In general, look for shampoos that are clear,  or labeled for fine hair, or "clarifying."

Make sure to get the shampoo on your scalp; dont worry about shampooing the ends. Rinse really well. Don't be afraid to shampoo every day if needed.

Re: Help with shampoo and conditioner

@thebaddie1 you might want to use two different shampoos...a Clarifying for the top (you can mix it with your usual shampoo) and a more moisturizing one for the lengths. Check out Abbey Yung for drugstore recs.
