Any hair growth products for thinning hair that ACTUALLY WORK??

Over the years my hair has gotten so much thinner and won’t grow like it used to. Also seems to shed more than it should 😕 I’m always searching for products to help with thickness and hair growth but never found a real winner...Any advice would be awesome!!

Re: Any hair growth products for thinning hair that ACTUALLY WORK??

The best product I found was when i was postpartum and having the worst hair shedding and dryness/thinness. I got recommended a postpartum hair vitamin from Baby Blues... meant to replenish vitamins shed after having a baby.. welll...i'm not postpartum but i take it because its literally the best supplement.  Has biotin, collagen, b12, vitamin a, folate, etc .. its a gummy and tastes like passion fruit -- so good.  They tend to sell out but I order from --- .  kind of a secret hack .. has helped my skin and nails too.

I also have problems with thinning hair. I've been putting castor oil on my scalp once a week for a few hours and I seem to be getting more baby hairs growing back. I'm also taking Hair Force vitamins by Prairie Naturals.

It's always best to try to rule out what is medically causing hair loss or thinning hair.

I think it sort of depends on what's causing the hair loss. If you have thyroid problems, you need to resolve that with medication before you're going to see any real improvement. If it's a medication side effect, there's kind of nothing you can do but try a different medication. I had massive hair loss from being on a blood thinner to dissolve clots, but my doctor switched me to a different medication and it stopped. Unfortunately, then I went through a period of hair loss due to approaching menopause, and as I can't take any hormones or hcg (like Serovital) because of the blood clots, that left Rogaine. And let me tell you, that was really working, but I had the rare and tragic side effect of suddenly packing on extra weight, so no more Rogaine. I've tried hair and nails supplements that are basically megadoses of biotin, and they broke me out horribly. Ironically, I started taking collagen powder a few months ago for my joints, and I have had massive amounts of hair regrowth ever since, and no acne. I am also taking fish oil supplements and evening primrose oil supplements, and they are definitely helping my skin, I don't know about my hair.

Thanks for advice and sharing your story! I have gotten blood work over the years and nothing really stood out as a real issue so I never got any concrete answers from drs. My own diagnosis is that it may be hormone/PCOS related.

Yeah, PCOS does all kinds of weird things. I wish you luck with it!

@pepicasa It would help to add supplements too, I would check with your doctor and maybe get a blood test done. I personally take Omega3, Biotin and Iron, and it's made a difference in my hair loss.

RE: Re: Any hair growth products for thinning hair that ACTUALLY WORK??

Yes! getting blood work done has been on my to do list for ages to try to figure out what is even going on! And yep just started taking some biotin, always interested to know what supplements work for other people. Thanks!

Hey, I suggest Viviscal as a hair growth supplement and the Alterna Caviar line. They specialize in densifying thinning hair. Their root treatment is great, they sell it at sephora. If not, the Aveda Invati line is great. I have tried both. The Alterna Caviar has less of a strong smell compared to the Aveda Invati system. People swear by these. Good luck!

Thank you! Will look this up!

Re: RE: Re: Any hair growth products for thinning hair that ACTUALLY WORK??

@pepicasa Actually, the Viviscal is included in the Ulta 21 Day's sale on the 24th (I think that's the right date).  I was planning on trying it myself!

Re: Any hair growth products for thinning hair that ACTUALLY WORK??

@pepicasa  I have very thin hair and my hair has been shedding like crazy for the past year. Literally I pull clumps out. My length hasn’t got better since I chopped off 9 inches. I thought it would grow faster if I cut it off. I started using  Bumble and bumble Full Potential Hair Preserving Shampoo 8.5 oz/ 250 mL and the whole line a month ago and I’ve noticed more thickness and I’m not loosing as much hair. I try to only wash it once a week and I try not to use any heat products and I’m finally getting some growth back. The summer is easier for me to grow since I don’t have to blow dry my hair a ton.

Re: RE: Re: Any hair growth products for thinning hair that ACTUALLY WORK??

@pepicasa

No, the answer is no, there is no shampoo or miracle supplement. Trichologist and hair stylist here. The only proven ingredient to help grow hair is Minoxidil (sold under various names such as Rogaine or Bosley). There are shampoos that create an optimal environment for the scalp not to lose any additional hair (Nioxin) but that’s it. Scientifically that is it. If you have blood work done and are low on levels, then your doctor will discuss that with you. If you have thyroid issues, your doctor will discuss that with you. If your hair loss is due to weight loss or a side effect of a medication, again your doctor will discuss that with you.
