Some lighthearted Friday Fun...
We all have a product that got away. Maybe it was something LE that we couldn't acquire. Maybe our HG product was discontinued without notice. Or any number of other reasons I'm hoping people will share.
I have 2 items that got away. Some time in the late 90s I waltzed into a MAC counter and bought a specific cool toned mid intensity pink blush and Aria eyeshadow. The blush in particular haunts me. I loved it so much I panned and repurchased it 3 times. Then I went through a phase of about 4 or so years of not wearing makeup and when I started wearing it again/cleaned out my old makeup bag I threw away the compact because I thought it was too 'old' without ever making note of the name. So I have NO idea what it was called/whether they still make it any more/how to find a dupe and that makes me very sad. I've gone to the MAC store a few times to try and figure it out but nothing from the existing line looks quite right. And then Aria was my perfect, satiny neutral taupe shade. It matched my eyelids perfectly but also had a lovely sheen that almost looked like a shift. Sadly, it's long discontinued 😞 but I think I may have finally found it's equal in Chantecaille Elephant, although texturally it's different.
Do you have a story of unrequited makeup love? Please share below. Who knows, maybe someone will have suggestions for a dupe, has one to trade, etc.
I have a few MAC items that haunt me.... very old, very rare that I am still ISO for my collection. I don't think I'll ever find them though haha...
Currently the KVD Star Studded palette is haunting me... wish I had it 😄
I know I had a lot of other items that used to haunt me but I kinda forgot about them... Like the Givenchy confetti palette and the Sephora Disney Jasmine palette. I have 2 jewelry pieces that haunt me more than the makeup 😄
Couple items that come to mind: Tom Ford Enchanted, Tom Ford She Wolf, Guerlain Du Dragon compact. Sometimes ago, somebody offered me TF Enchanted for $200. As much as i love Tom Ford make up, uhhh... NO i dont think so. I cant just almost tripple pay for a couple year old makeup. New technologies will be out. More awesome stuffs will surface or maybe i'm just cheap ... i dunno. I like what @Anonymous said "Life goes on" 😉
I don't even wear eye shadow but I wanted She Wolf so bad
This thread can cause emotional anxiety if you are really looking for your stuff!!!! Luckily, I am over it. Life goes on! ;')
1. Before the 'dry shampoo' crazed hit the US a few years ago I used to really miss Boots Dry Shampoo.
These days, I am just home, so I just wash my hair. (not so much need for dry shampoo)
2. Middle Eastern fragrances. Used to fall in love with them and then wished I at least bought a 2nd bottle. The decorative bottles rarely have names and came from specialty shops. They have a richness and freshness to their scents. Those haunt me! ;')
3. Ayurveda products/treatments. Never realized I would stop traveling to India until I came home and stayed. #poodlemom
4. Loden Hotel has this spray hand sanitizer that is the perfect blend of bergamot, lemongrass, ginger, etc. (I think this is what I am smelling) I don't even know if this exist as I got it in a convention gift bag from the hotel. Should of grabbed more! ;') I do have a little left that I save for special times. Lol!
The MAC Cinderella everything escaped my clutches. I remember I fell asleep that morning while waiting for the release. 😴😴😩😩😩😩
@heartsmyface I know the feeling! I did the same with the Mac Mariah collection even though I had work in the morning. Stayed up all night waiting for it to launch, fell asleep for like 2 hours and lo and behold in those two hours everything I wanted was sold out. I took it as a sign and ended up getting everything I wanted later on so it wasn't too much of a big deal. I remember I didn't attempt to try for the Cinderella collection because I knew I wasn't going to get it 😕
Oh no @heartsmyface! 😞 Did you ever check in FB groups for some?
Yeah, that sucked, but I've been very lucky with mostly everything else I've coveted.
Thanks, @unfungirl! Unfortunately, I'm out of town for the next 1.5 weeks and really hoping it'll stay in stock for a few more days before I order!
@txcatx I thought I read recently they are bringing Plum Blossom back at some point this spring, so perhaps hope isn't lost yet?
Without a doubt Giorgio Armani lipstick in color "514." It was a spring limited edition shade three years ago and now it's my White Whale. I wore it constantly. It was a pinky/beigey/gray pale shimmery perfect just-a-little-something color that I re-applied multiple times a day with the confidence of someone who didn't know it was limited edition. And early that fall when I went to replace it and the Nordstrom sales associate told me I was the fourth person that day who came in looking for that color I knew I was doomed. I couldn't even find it on eBay. I'm still trying to dupe it and I haven't quite gotten it right yet. Bite Cava, NARS Cruising and Smashbox Pretty Social are all in the right family and I'll get excited. But then I'll check it against my old tube that still has a small skim of product on it and...it's not right.
@greenchilli but last year I bet you would've said Black Orchid, no? 😉
Black Orchid got the closest I think. But it didn't haunt me enough to purchase it off eBay. I had Black Dahlia, so I was quite content. ETA: I actually did pine for it a lot, but was too cheap t pay a premium for it. So perhaps a cheap haunting?
I assume a haunting will make me purchase on eBay at a minimum 2 times the cost.
As of now....nothing yet.
Every so often I think something was pretty and I would like it, but not enough to pay a premium. Just a "nice to have had it".
@greenchilli - What you're talking about is an obsession: "preoccupy or fill the mind of (someone) continually, intrusively, and to a troubling extent."
A haunting is "difficult to ignore or forget."
Haunting = frequently (we think about these items now and again or a lot, but not constantly; we hope one day to find that item or a really close dupe)
Obsession = preoccupied (it's the only thing we think about; it drives us nuts to the point that we'll do anything to get it even paying 2X or more on e-bay)
Note: This is meant to be friendly information and to show you all the fun you are missing by not having any items that haunt you. Join us @greenchilli!
10-4!
By that token, Tom Ford Black Orchid was a definite haunting. Yup, a proper haunting.
My makeup world is limited either due to choices or taste. So my hauntings are rare.
I am sure the time spent on BT and reading this thread will be directly proportional to the haunting I feel at the end of this week.
