Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Hey all you cool cats and kittens, welcome to YEAR 6 of the Pan It Challenge!

ElleElleG_1-1672620471899.gif

**Join us in the 2024 thread available here: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃 *this is the number one recommendation for everyone, regardless of how long you’ve been panning! Those photos add up and can help you realize progress you might otherwise overlook.
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Past Panning Challenges:

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi it's always fun to try something new BUT I definitely wouldn't object to grabbing this one again.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@CookieGirl1  great job! And I know just what you mean about that bittersweet feeling, too.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Oh awesome work! @CookieGirl1 🥳

That's all done and you loved it too. That's a bitter sweet moment 😉

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@CookieGirl1 Excellent panning. It is really a great one! I do use it as a bronzer as well. I switch back and forth between this one and a powder. It is really beautiful, blends nicely, and leaves a glowy sun-kissed look. Do you know what you are going to use as your next bronzer?

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@Mellmars1185 I still haven't personally tried the MAKEUP BY MARIO SoftSculpt® Transforming Skin Perfector but I can see how it would definitely be a pretty powder bronzer!  I'm going to take the opportunity to work on a couple of my other bronzers until it's more "bronzer season" and brands start putting out new ones before I actually buy any kind of replacement.  I want to leave my options open 😉.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@CookieGirl1  Oh you sure did love it to death 😁.  But it’s great to know how much you really enjoyed it.  I bought the light tone.  I’m still trying to incorporate it in my routine.  I saw his video on how he used it all over the face.  Did you ever use it like that?

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@Cissy63 no, this one was in Medium and I have a light skintone so it worked perfectly as a bronzer but it'd be WAY too dark all over the face and even if I had a lighter shade I don't think I'd use it like that (but that being said, I wouldn't personally purchase a lighter shade, so there's that).

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Thanks, I appreciate your input.😃

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Wow, February really flew by. 😲

MONTHLY SUMMARY - Panning was alright, some items were reached for more than others and it showed.

FEBRUARY ALL STARS: ND Monroe is not playing around. I think I can be done with this by end of April if I use it everyday and if my allergies don't sideline me - I had a couple of days in February when I needed to hit "pause" on using any eyeshadow because of allergies and am wondering if that will be a more common occurrence in the next couple of months. I guess we'll see. The DIY lip balm is being used up much more quickly than I could have imagined.

NEED TO PICK UP THE PACE: The Moroccanoil suffered from neglect in February and the Chanel lip liner is seeing slight, incremental movement but nothing that would probably be noticeable to anyone but me.

Everything else is a work in progress.

2.2023 Pan Update - ND.png

You realize just how much product are in these shadows when you're trying to pan them. This is my fourth year of panning on BIC and this could be the year (nooo, it will be the year - focus itsfi, FOCUS!!), I hit full pan on one of the shimmery shades. Looking at you, Monroe!

The hair care items in this year's project pan are going to be the ones for which "slow and steady win the race."

I've been using that second shade as a lip primer and it was exciting to see the dip in the corner. 😀

Very surprised by how quickly I'm working my way through this DIY tinted lip balm.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi Monroe is a beautiful shade!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@lmaster, 100% agree. ND's shadows, including Monroe, are beautiful, in color and formula. Makes it easy to use.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Constant amazement with Biba @itsfi .  Those three hair products may be slow and steady, but they show progress and that's what matters!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Thank you @missjeanie! It is sometimes an act of sheer willpower to keep my head down and just focus on working through a few of the shadows. The formulation is lovely so that helps. As does the support and encouragement from many folks here, like you. Thank you! 😊 Panning definitely shines a light on how much time it can take to work your way through a shadow - helps (somewhat) with the temptation to pick up another palette here and there.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Dang, @itsfi, you're doing an AMAZING job on that palette!!!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@CookieGirl1, thank you! It sure does take a while to get through eye shadow so that's nice to hear.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi you're (literally) killing it!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi  Wow, you’re doing a terrific job, not just now but for 4 years .  Wonderful 😃😃 You can do this!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Thank you @Cissy63! 😊 Panning this palette has been a long term project, that's for sure. It'll feel great when Monroe is fully panned.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

(I missed this, what did you use to make your DIY lip balm? I'm very curious 😄)

Your making steady excellent progress here, @itsfi good job! It's so impressive seeing your photos and how much your going through. Your eye shadows thou, your really working your way through the palette.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@CynthieLu, the DIY tinted balm came about from mixing Laneige lip sleeping mask (the mint choco version) and what I had left of a mini Tarte paaarty blush. I have a large and mini size of the Laneige lip balm - used all the balm in the mini and added some more from the full size to fill up the jar.

The ND palette been through the entirety of my panning experience. I used that palette every day for 2020 and almost every day for 2021. It really put into perspective for me how long it takes to go through eyeshadow.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Love the sexy close-up of that lip palette, haha @itsfi -- you are killing it with Monroe, such a beautiful shade. I wish I could get a single of Sculpture, though. I'm psyched for you that the homemade balm is working out so well.
