Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Hey all you cool cats and kittens, welcome to YEAR 6 of the Pan It Challenge!

ElleElleG_1-1672620471899.gif

**Join us in the 2024 thread available here: Pan It! - 2024 Challenge

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃 *this is the number one recommendation for everyone, regardless of how long you’ve been panning! Those photos add up and can help you realize progress you might otherwise overlook.
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Past Panning Challenges:

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@heavyhedon  Oh my despite feeling sick you made decent dents in your panning!😀. Good to hear you are on the mend 🌹

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@Cissy63 -- TY so much, & yes, I'm feeling almost normal, knock on wood.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@heavyhedon great progress! there is something so satisfying about seeing a lipstick that is starting to get some use!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

So true! @cianni , and I want to make sure I use this one to death b/c it's a real treasure.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@heavyhedon Excellent panning progress!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Thanks so much @Mellmars1185 !

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@heavyhedon Way to go on your panning! Great work, and the start of the year has you off to an amazing run ‌😄‌🥳

Make up takes such patience to work through and you have made a ton of progress ‌🎆‌ ‌💗

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

TY @CynthieLu -- definitely feels like a well-spent month, makeup-wise. Now I have to choose Feb.'s items.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Whoa @heavyhedon!  😳 That pencil eyeliner is a shell of what it was!!! You are owning it! Awesome job all around but especially with that beauty! 🙌🏼

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi -- thanks! I probably could have finished it if I'd worn makeup every single day.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

January 2023 Update - if January is any indicator, this year is going to go by fast! Here's what January meant for project pan -

MONTHLY SUMMARY: It was an okay month for panning. The hair products saw consistent use and as a result, some noticeable progress. I'm getting used to wearing eyeshadow everyday again and learning how to best incorporate the Bobbi Brown Jadestone palette consistently into the mix with ND Biba. Will change up how I put some items to use in February to see if I reach for them more frequently. 🤞

JANUARY ALL STAR: goes to JVN Styling Milk. It's one of my favorites this month and I have a feeling I may move quickly through this one. I love how soft and silky smooth this makes my strands.

We've still got a ways to go but I'm pretty sure Monroe (2nd row, 2nd shade) will be the first to full pan of this group. Wondering if Coco (1st row, 3rd shade) will hit pan first though. CHANGES AFOOT: Already? It's only been a month! lol
  • To get more usage out of BB Jadestone and to not lose momentum on ND Biba, my plan for February is to pair a ND shimmer shade with a BB matte or a ND matte with a BB shimmer shadow. I'll aim to reach for these palettes 2-3 days per week in February.

  • I like both the WA lip palette and the Chanel lip liner but don't always remember to use them. To get in the habit of using them more, I'm moving both to my desk drawer at work and will use them for my lip color after lunch, with the aim of putting them to use about 3 or 4 times per week.

Excited to see everyone's panning efforts for the first month of the year!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi the WA lip palette would be perfect for post lunch.  Every time I see Biba I think Monroe would be great as a one and done.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Oooh, that’s a brilliant idea @missjeanie! 😍 I think I will give that a go this month. Maybe add an eyeliner if I’m feeling fancy or extra … or extra fancy. 🤣

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi I bet it would be beautiful on you!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi Man those hold out shades!! Fabulous work!! I love watching your progress so much.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

I know @Samtian! They just keep hanging on! It's like they're taunting me - "neener, neener, neener!" 😂🤣😂  Challenge accepted, I say!!! 😅

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi that's serious will power!!! I'm so impressed with how many shades you've hit pan on

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@lmaster, thank you. This is year 4 with this eyeshadow palette. Project Pan with Biba started less about trying to use what I have or test how long it actually takes to use up a producct than it did as way to have a consistent routine during the lockdown. I probably wore makeup more regularly on the daily then than any other time - something about Zoom calls enabled that. 😂 This thread helps to keep me motivated and accountable to sticking with it, and in turn, I buy eyeshadow palettes with a lot less frequency than before. I think my wallet should thank me for it, but I find other things to pick up that makes that "thankfulness" null and void. 😅

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi this is great progress! tusk definitely has a dent in it, and i love that BB palette, i think they'll pair beautifully! making the transition to makeup everyday is the hardest part.

this is going to sound like a crazy question, but how do you apply product on your brush? your pans always seem to start in that top left corner, and mine are always dead centre. are we using brushes differently? are you left handed? it kind of reminds me of how you can tell who owns a lipstick based on the way the bullet is shaped after it's been used!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Thank you @cianni! That is not a crazy question at all. My starting in the upper left corner is admittedly not the norm (and for BB Jadestone, I'll *probably* pick up product from the middle of each shadow pan. 😀 Around the time I started with the ND Biba palette, I was playing around with my other shadows with how they looked when applied wet versus when applied dry, whether as a shadow or a liner. Whenever I'd try the shadow after wetting my brush, I'd go into the shadow in the corner. At the time, it sorta bothered me a little that I'd have a (probalby only noticeable to me) dent in the corner and in the middle - that's a bit weird, I know. So with Biba, I thought, okay, try the shadow first as a liner in the corner which I did but then it ended up that I just kept picking up product from the upper left corner of each shadow. 😂 After a couple of shadows like that, I just thought, well, it would look odd if I started another shadow in this palette in the center ... so then every shadow in this palette has started out in the upper left corner. Ha!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi  Gosh you are really getting a lot of use out of your ND palette.  That’s great.  I hear you about the JVN hair milk.  It’s been wonderful for my hair too😀
