Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

*12/15/19 - The 2020 thread is now live: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿพ Hi All!

Can y'all believe 2019 is literally knocking on the door??  Given its proximity it's high time we get the 2019 Panning Challenge Rolling.

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you arenโ€™t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, Iโ€™m certain youโ€™ll see some changes ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades youโ€™re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of othersโ€™ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Donโ€™t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  Itโ€™s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be funโ€ฆ.if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you donโ€™t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Past Panning Challenges:

Spoiler

May pan be ever in your favor!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@Kaylabr wow youโ€™re doing so well! I envy your highlighter pan!! I have so many highlighters that I feel like Iโ€™ll never see the end of one, despite having 3 in my project for this year ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Thank you! With the hourglass palette, I've been able to use it in a few different ways which has made it easier to get through. I use them all all over the face to set and the darkest one as a bronzer. I've also used them for eyeshadow and the middle one for a targeted highlight. For the becca cream highlighter i've used it under and over foundation. I hear you - highlighter is one of my favorite products so I get even more excited when I hit pan on one. I think you have a great goal in mind for the year. You got this!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@Kaylabr, your almost finished Hourglass palette is a thing of beauty! Great job!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Thank you! I agree, it is quite the site to behold. I've been working on that palette for almost 4 years!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Thatโ€™s a lot blush to go @Kaylabr ! Iโ€™m so slow at blush, even using the same one daily. I like your goals!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Thank you! I feel the same way about my blush usage haha. But then I look at my progress over the last year and see how much I've used up.

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@Kaylabr Awesome job!

Best,

Rebecca

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Thank you!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Love the word chuffed @Kaylabr! Great job on using those blushes and all of your other products.

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

haha thank you! it's definitely been a word i find myself using more and more because it makes me smile. it's been fun working with old favorites in new ways and its been exciting to be hitting pan on more products.

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Itโ€™s scary sometimes how inside my head you are @ShortErica ! Lol

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Isn't it crazy?! I try to read the responses others make before posting and many times yours are exactly what I want to say. Great minds @missjeanie?

RE: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Iโ€™ve got some updates after being MIA for a bit. The MAC lipstick panned and I sent it off to the Back to MAC program for recycling. I hit micro pan on the Tarte blush and Iโ€™m calling that one panned. Still plugging along on the others: the Hula blush is down 2 grams, no sign of pan in the near future. MAC eye shadow is down 4 grams and pan is imminent. The Bite lippie is down 6 grams. the Nars lippie is down 6 grams. Unknown concealer stick is down 6 grams! Iโ€™m sorry to report that we are in a holding pattern with the Killer Curls. No progress has been made YTD due to husbandโ€™s complaint about the fragrance ๐Ÿ˜ซ

Re: RE: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Any guess on how many uses it took you to hit pan on the Tarte blush @christyrc? I've been tracking mine and it's over 100 and it looks like I've barely made a dent. ๐Ÿ˜ข

RE: Re: RE: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

I admire your tracking @ShortErica that is very cool. If I had to guess I would say 250. Iโ€™ve been using it almost exclusively for a year and I figure there must have been at least 100 days without makeup. But, Iโ€™m super pale so it only takes a tiny amount of blush (like half a dose!) Good luck, friend. Hang in there!

Re: RE: Re: RE: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

I think I'm a light blush user too @christyrc. I'll let you know when I get to 250 and see if there is pan. Thanks for the encouragement.

RE: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

~2 month update! Finally seeing some progress on my eyeshadows. Finished my Cover Fx mini highlighter and a few mini primers. Slowly making progress in my brow products (ABH powder in Blonde and Becca brow mousse in Cocoa) my UD Primer Potion, and my Nars TM. Also pictured: sad pans/empties and items Iโ€™m currently working on panning. Iโ€™m really struggling panning lip products because its not something I wear most days.

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

May the blush be with me!

Thanks again to the BIC members who have helped with prior selections: @GG84  - Authentic for January, @GG84 -Skillful for February, @eshoe - Angelic for March and @ElleElleG - Exhilarating for April.

A little detail about the shades I have:

Spoiler

Blush Update 2019-04.PNG

Tarte holiday blush bazaar top circle (at 12 o'clock) then rotating clockwise:

-Highlight - Whimsical - X Not Included X

-Angelic (peachy pink) โ€“ X March X

-Fortunate (pink melon)

-Skillful (pink berry) โ€“ X February X

-Exhilarating (fuschia) - X April X

Second circle (at 1 o'clock) then rotating clockwise:

-Endless (pink raspberry)

-Dainty (melon)

-Extraordinary (shimmering coral)

-Highlight - Worthy - X Not Included X

-Authentic (plummy rose) - X January X

-Tarte blush - Paaarty (nude)

-Bare Minerals Secret (mauve)

Didn't take a before picture and the after wouldn't have shown much progress anyway. Oops!

This is definitely a brighter pink. Sometimes if I wore too much with the pairing of the Bite lip crayon in Glace I was on the verge of clownish looking. But it can be applied softly and when it was more flattering, either as part of this pair or on its own I enjoyed it. In the pan this shade looks quite brown especially compared to its description.

Iโ€™ve already missed out on May 1st so help me with a quick decision for tomorrow. Thanks!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@ShortErica  That plummy rose shade for January looks very pretty! Did you end up liking it during this planning challenge? If not, which was your favourite?

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

The January shade was good. It paired super well with purple leaning lips. I would say February surprised me the most since I hadn't tried it prior to my blush pan challenge (it's weird calling it pan since I won't hit it but I guess it's rotating pan?). It is perfect for a soft flush of color. I prefer a natural look so it was wonderful. March gave me more of a neutral blush look and prior to the challenge was my favorite but I think the pink flush is more my style so February wins so far @Guessgal.

@sparklekai has inspired me to dip into the Paaarty! blush again since she hit pan. I doubt I'll be able to do it. I already have 100+ uses and it barely shows any dip. But I am now curious how the soft pink flush of the February choice and Paaarty! will compare. I think February has the edge.

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

if it makes you feel better i think i've been paaarty almost exclusively since January and i wear makeup 5-6 days a week! he's a stubborn bugger!
