Are the Skyn Iceland eye gels supposed to smell rancid?

I picked up the Skyn Iceland hydro cool firming eye gels this past weekend in the Labour Day sale -- I've never tried them before and have been wanting to, because I hear great things about them and I'm a fan of some of the other Skyn Iceland stuff.

But when I opened them to put them on, they smelled rancid. The smell reminds me of rancid peanuts.

I had thought they were supposed to be free of synthetic fragrance, but I don't know is this is natural/correct. Are they supposed to smell this way, or is there something wrong with it? Can't find anything on google or in here about it. Would anyone be able to answer this question for me?

Re: Are the Skyn Iceland eye gels supposed to smell rancid?

I know this post is very old, @Mechart - but I just opened a package I purchased at the same time last year, and they definitely have a rancid/off scent. Unfortunately it is too late for me to return them and there was nothing Ulta could do. It sounds like the brand had an off batch, as they usually last much, much longer.

Re: Are the Skyn Iceland eye gels supposed to smell rancid?

@eshoesorry thought I'd replied to this -- the replacements were from a different batch and they also went rancid within a few weeks. By then Sephora was unwilling to do anything about it. Luckily I got them on sale.... but definitely do not recommend. There are other eye masks out there that don't do this.

Re: Are the Skyn Iceland eye gels supposed to smell rancid?

@eshoe I didn't know they could go bad.  I assumed since they were sealed in their own foil packets they were good forever!

Re: Are the Skyn Iceland eye gels supposed to smell rancid?

Yay @itscarin you are my first email notification 🙌🏼!!!!!

I didn’t either, especially not sealed, within sealed packets. I reached out to the brand, so we will see what they have to say. The person I spoke with at Ulta suggested that in the future, I should always open them when I first get home to ensure nothing is wrong with the product. Which...once these are opened, you have to use them🤷🏻‍♀️ They were sealed in the original packaging and stored in a bin, the way I usually store extras. Such a bummer, my eyes needed some love this morning!

Re: Are the Skyn Iceland eye gels supposed to smell rancid?

@eshoe Glad to hear notifications are working again!  What an odd suggestion— that you should inspect the product right away to ensure quality.  Why not open it at the store???  Idk. I’m not that picky when it comes to my cosmetics. I rarely have a complaint about something being “off” but it seems to me that the onus shouldn’t be on the customer to ensure quality.  If that’s the case maybe we should just find better customer service?

Re: Are the Skyn Iceland eye gels supposed to smell rancid?

@itscarin I realized he didn’t know the product, and explained that each mask is individually wrapped within another sealed package. Maybe it’s just time for me to use something with less packaging. In the Tatcha Masterclass I just did, Daniel suggested misting cotton pads with essence and chilling them for a diy eye mask. Guess I am going to try that sooner rather than later!

Re: Are the Skyn Iceland eye gels supposed to smell rancid?

Thanks @quspork and @Samtian for the feedback! I called Sephora and they confirmed they're not supposed to smell like that, so its getting taken care of 🙂

Going over the ingredients list with my mum, she felt it smelled more like olive oil that's gone off, and olive is in the ingredients. So possible they just went bad in the summer heat or something.

@Mechart Glad to hear it is getting taken care of!

Re: Are the Skyn Iceland eye gels supposed to smell rancid?

That's definitely not ok @Mechart. As mentioned below, I don't recall there being much scent when using them. I would return/exchange the package you have.

Re: Are the Skyn Iceland eye gels supposed to smell rancid?

@Mechart Oh no! They definitely don't smell like that! I don't think I've ever noticed a smell on them.
