LackI haven't been in here in a while and I've missed BIC! I wanted to create a post to sum up my year in makeup and find out what everybody else's was like. This year was makeup-crazy! So many releases! So here's a guideline I came up with:
1) Your favorite purchase of the year (try just 1!)
2) A purchase you regret- why?
3) Most expensive purchase- was it worth the money?
4) Most hyped product you bought- was it worth it?
5) Most shopped at store (for makeup). Did you shop more in store or online?
6) Did you spend less, the same, or more than other years?
7) Rediscovered loves or underrated makeup discoveries
😎 A product you missed out on or haven't bought yet but really want
9) Did your makeup routine change in any way?
10) What makeup trend do you think will be big next year?
Here are my answers:
1) Simple Human mirror
2) Natasha Denona Sunset Palette- even though it's beautiful and amazing I think it needed to be more diverse in shades to be truly functional and I don't get enough use out of it to warrant how expensive it was.
3) Simple Human Mirror or my Wayne Goss Brush sets- I bought both the eye and face sets. They are all amazing I regret nothing. I love the mirror, too.
4) ND Sunset and Pat McGrath lipsticks- yes, amazing, though a little overpriced.
5) Sephora but Ulta is a very close second, mostly online.
6) I spent a lot more than last year this year.
7) Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer. I'd forgotten how good it was.
😎 Nars x Man Ray Palette in Love Game- I waaaaaant iiiiit
9) I wouldn't say changed but I'd definitely say I'm getting better at it.
10) This year was all about the warm tones and blinding highlight. I'm gonna say next year, more toned down highlight and shiny lips instead of matte.
I'm tagging a few of you that I remember from old BT! @veronika23 @Tamara76 @Ispend2much6 @gonerogue @Mcakes @jesscheems @ZombieMetroAnt @TKLJ @jozkid @heartsmyface
@HaleyJulia happy first post! A thumbs up for Gloss Bomb! If you like the Peach palette, which got kind of mixed reviews, look at the Matte Peach, it's got pretty good reviews and the only reason I didn't buy it was because I had single shades that duped it and made my own 🙂 Sephora Brand has some serious hidden gems. Highly recommend the Outrageous Effect lip gloss from their line.
@HaleyJulia I love BTS! I use the waterproof version and my lashes have never looked better. It receives such mixed responses, but if applied correctly, it's a fabulous mascara. The Fenty gloss is totally worth the price. It's a heavenly gloss and one that I wear nearly every day. I don't even mind my hair getting stuck to my lips because the product is superb!
Totally agree with you on #2 - I've never understood the hype with that formula and I looooooove BTS.
Thinking long and hard on these answers!
1) Your favorite purchase of the year?
Picking just one is hard BUT...Simple Human mirror
2) A purchase you regret- why?
I kind of regret the Naked Heat palette. I really do like the shades but I just find that I reach for single shadows and cream shadows more. I need to make more of an effort to use this because, like I said, it really is a nice product.
3) Most expensive purchase- was it worth the money?
Simple Human mirror - yes! I’m so glad I bought it this year!
4) Most hyped product you bought- was it worth it?
Natasha Denona eyeshadows. I bought one of the 5 pan palettes and this one I actually do reach for. It is beautiful. It was worth it.
5) Most shopped at store (for makeup). Did you shop more in store or online?
Sephora. Probably equal 50/50
6) Did you spend less, the same, or more than other years?
Same. Next year i begin a very concentrated effort to spend less.
7) Rediscovered loves or underrated makeup discoveries
Surratt. The entire brand in general. I love the blushes, eyebrow pomade, brow pencil, eyeshadows, foundation, and lipsticks. I’d like to try a brush or two in 2018.
😎 A product you missed out on or haven't bought yet but really want
Some items I really want to buy in 2018 are from Oribe. I love their hair products but they are just so expensive. ALSO - Cle de Peau The Foundation. I have a few samples and my gosh it is beautiful. But that price tag makes my eyes water.
9) Did your makeup routine change in any way?
I toned the highlighter down and dialed the smokey shadows up.
10) What makeup trend do you think will be big next year?
I agree with what others have said - I think people are doing more “pro makeup artist” inspired looks and less “Instagram” makeup looks. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking.
@ashlynaf I do need to give Naked Heat some more love. I think it could have benefitted from a gold or a champagne, to make it more well rounded. Two thumbs up for the Simple Human mirror!
@ashlynaf I had similar thoughts about Naked Heat too. I don't necessarily regret it and wished I returned it, but feel bad that I'm not reaching for it. The palette is the perfect level of warmth for me, but I don't wear warm shadows that much.
What a fun Q&A! Great idea @makeitup305, I had to really think about my answers and the items I've used/purchased this year.
1) Your favorite purchase of the year (try just 1!)
The ABH and Nicole Guerriero glow kit. I love the colours and the quality. I used it quite a bit in the spring and summer, but have stopped since. Now that it's winter, I need to start using it again because the pinky tones will work with the looks I've been wearing recently.
2) A purchase you regret- why?
Becca Prismatic Amethyst. I think I fell for the marketing of this product, and the fact that amethyst is my birthstone. I love Becca highlighters, they're my HG formula, but the colour isn't wearable all the time. I've only used it once since I purchased it, but maybe I'll start wearing it again since I prefer cooler tones in winter.
3) Most expensive purchase- was it worth the money?
Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk. I do like the product, but it didn't meet all my expectations. Definitely not a repeat purchase right now because I have to mix it with another product to get what I want.
4) Most hyped product you bought- was it worth it?
It wasn't hyped this year, but many people went crazy for the CoverFX Customer Cover drops when they first released. I'm very late to the party, but this product is totally worth it. I mix it in with GA Luminous Silk and the combination is fantastic!
I also gave in and purchased Tarte Shape Tape when they had their major sale for it. I hate to say it, but it's not worth it for me. I have to mix two shades, the coverage isn't that good, and it's a little thick and drying! MAC's Pro Longwear concealer is my HG and nothing has topped it yet.
5) Most shopped at store (for makeup). Did you shop more in store or online?
Sephora for sure, and definitely online.
6) Did you spend less, the same, or more than other years?
For makeup I spent less than last year, but my overall spending this year was more. I need to cut back on everything - makeup, clothing, accessories, and shoes!
7) Rediscovered loves or underrated makeup discoveries
Rimmel Wake Me Up concealer. It's a great drugstore option for a minimal makeup day. It used to be all I wore until I discovered MAC's Pro Longwear concealer, but it's great for work now.
😎 A product you missed out on or haven't bought yet but really want
Nothing that I can think of! I've stopped craving into LE items that require me to stock websites...
9) Did your makeup routine change in any way?
I've only changed my eye makeup routine. I only wear eyeshadow when I'm having fun with some looks. On a daily basis, I focus on complexion, brows, mascara, and gloss. I'll add a neutral eye every once in a while.
10) What makeup trend do you think will be big next year?
I honestly have no idea. I believe extreme highlighting and matte lips is over, and more subtle products are coming in. A more natural look and less of a mask, kinda like Kim K's new aesthetic.
@Melissa136 I wasn’t a fan of Luminous Silk ether! It also gave me tiny little red bumps (only 2 or 3 at a time) on my face 😞 I think it might have been the alcohol content.
@k617 Good to know I'm not the only one! I thought I was crazy for not loving Luminous Silk right off the bat. It's very rare for my skin to react to something, so it's really up to performance to determine whether I like an item or not 😞
I used to be like that too before my mid 20’s! Now that I’m almost 30 my skin seems to have become more sensitive to things.
Luminous Silk used to be my HG, but it also started causing a reaction on my skin. I still go back and try it from time to time because I used to love it so much, but it always gives me a few spots as well.
@ashlynaf Oh no. It's so disappointing when an HG doesn't work anymore. I used to love Too Faced Born this Way foundation, but now I'm thinking it's too heavy for me on a daily basis. I go back to it from time to time and still enjoy it, but MUFE Ultra HD is my new HG.
This is a fun topic @makeitup305 and it's good to see you around again!
Your favorite purchase of the year (try just 1!) 1 is hard, but my favorite purchase of the year is probably The Uma Clarity Oil. It has made the most difference in my skin.
2) A purchase you regret- why? I was not a big fan of any of the Pat McGrath lipsticks. I'm not a big fan of matte lipsticks and the creme ones are still mostly matte to me.
3) Most expensive purchase- was it worth the money? Um, I guess the Viseart Pro Mattes I palette. Yes, it's worth it. Those are the best mattes out there. I think the Natasha Denonna Palettes (Sunset and Lila are slightly cheaper)
4) Most hyped product you bought- was it worth it? I think the Sunset and Lila palettes. They are pretty good. I like the looks I get with them, but I also like MUFE and they are half the price.
5) Most shopped at store (for makeup). Did you shop more in store or online? I'm going to assume Sephora. I didn't keep track, but I'm pretty sure it's good ole Sephora. And 90% done online. It's glorious to shop from the comfort of my bed.
6) Did you spend less, the same, or more than other years? I spent more this year; A lot more on skincare and bought lots of new release stuff over last year. I plan on spending considerably less next year.
7) Rediscovered loves or underrated makeup discoveries Ben Nye Banana powder. The ole faithful that I loved, finished in 2016 and moved on to other things. I bought it again and truly love that powder.
😎 A product you missed out on or haven't bought yet but really want I can't think of something I didn't get that I wanted this year. That's probably slightly sad. After reading the comments, I forgot all about Sephora Monopoly! I still want that!
9) Did your makeup routine change in any way? I started to contour more this year than ever before in the past. I also started doing way more smokey eye looks for evenings this year. Perfecting the technique really worked!
10) What makeup trend do you think will be big next year? I have no idea.
1) Your favorite purchase of the year (try just 1!)
Lorac POTC cheek palette, the blush colors especially. They are so smooth and butter soft. I hadn't given much thought to lorac despite seeing good things on BIC but that was definitely my gateway drug, I ended up with 2 of their eyeshadow palettes as well!
2) A purchase you regret- why?
Nothing comes to mind, but I have been much more mindful spending this year and trying to use things up!
3) Most expensive purchase- was it worth the money?
Sunday Riley good genes. Yes! Multiple repurchases for me. Lots of similar things but nothing quite the same.
4) Most hyped product you bought- was it worth it?
Not a traditional answer, but Sephora Monopoly briefly came back into stock earlier this year, YES! I WANNA BE THE LIPSTICK! Totally worth it.
5) Most shopped at store (for makeup). Did you shop more in store or online?
For makeup probably a tie between Sephora and ulta, and as a whole sephora but I did do much more purchasing at ulta, cult, and space NK than in years past.
6) Did you spend less, the same, or more than other years?
Less!
7) Rediscovered loves or underrated makeup discoveries
Diorshow mascara. I was using up samples and other things and forgot how much I loved having a mascara I can count on to be great every time.
😎 A product you missed out on or haven't bought yet but really want
Mac girls basic B* palette. It's sold out everywhere but saks online right now and I'm having major FOMO, but I can't decide if I just love the name and colors or if I'd actually use it!
9) Did your makeup routine change in any way?
Tried a little bit bolder eyeshadow looks.
10) What makeup trend do you think will be big next year?
No clue but excited to see.
@CC3616 I think Lorac is highly underrated. I have almost all their blushes (including the POTC) and if you like that palette, their individual blushes are just as good and have a ton of shades.
I totally missed out on the Monopoly and still am disappointed! I guess I could change my answer; I forgot about that. I'd play that all the time!
1) Your favorite purchase of the year (try just 1!) - I think the Biossance Squalane + Vitamin C Rose oil - this oil has really changed my skin for the better!
2) A purchase you regret- why? Hmm I don't think I regret anything right now - if it's no good, back to Sephora it goes!
3) Most expensive purchase- was it worth the money? Probably the Foreo Espada for $199 CAD. Sadly, I don't think it was worth it because I rarely get bacterial breakouts anymore. Most of mine are hormonal. Second most expensive is probably my Clarisonic Mia Fit which cost me less than the Foreo Espada because i used some points at SDM. Time will tell whether it's worth it - I've used the Clarisonic before, then it broke after 3 years in 2015, and I've been using the Foreo Luna or just cleaning with my hands ever since, until I decided to reintroduce it a few months back.
4) Most hyped product you bought- was it worth it? I rarely buy a product because of the hype but I caved and bought the Colourpop Yes, Please! eye shadow palette when I happened to stumble on it being in stock in between hours it was OOS. It was only $16 US so I thought why not. I think the colours are gorgeous, the formula is good and the price is affordable, so it was worth it.
5) Most shopped at store (for makeup). Did you shop more in store or online? Sephora. And more online, I think.
6) Did you spend less, the same, or more than other years? More, whoops.
7) Rediscovered loves or underrated makeup discoveries I have a super old (5+ years) Sephora eyeshadow brush that is large and fluffy and meant for cream shadows...I recently started using it for the outer corner and it is amazing! Also, the brand Makeup Revolution - I bought a few more things this year. I think it's a great affordable brand with lots of lots of product choices. Some are hit and miss, but you really can't beat their prices!
😎 A product you missed out on or haven't bought yet but really want - I kind of wish I picked up the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit palette for holiday this year! I wasn't going to, since I already have 2 of the powders, but now I feel like I missed out!
9) Did your makeup routine change in any way? I spend a little more time nowadays doing my eye shadow. I also stopped wearing foundation in general. I recently started again, just to use up the products that have been sitting in my drawer unused which is making me feel guilty!
10) What makeup trend do you think will be big next year? I don't know. I rarely follow trends so I'm usually not great at predicting them! But it seem like matte lips are out, and I think the holo/duochrome trend will continue into 2018.
Fun thread, @makeitup305!
1) Your favorite purchase of the year (try just 1!) Just 1, eh? Hmmm…. Blithe Soothing and Healing Green Tea Splash Mask – great, easy exfoliating product and I saw results fast.
2) A purchase you regret- why? Oh, this one is much easier to answer. Whamisa Sea Kelp sheet mask. I heard and read so many raves about this product. Sadly, sea kelp is not compatible with my face. I had allergic reaction to the sheet mask – itchy on my face and even after I removed it as quickly as I could, lots of blotchy redness – ugh. Lesson learned.
3) Most expensive purchase- was it worth the money? Amore Pacific Vintage Single Extract Essence and yes, definitely worth the money!
4) Most hyped product you bought- was it worth it? Fenty matte foundation and the universal lip gloss. I love the messaging of the Fenty line and the color range is standout, but the foundation initially didn’t work with my skin type. Good news is that there were a couple of posts on BIC that mentioned mixing a drop of facial oil with the foundation; I just started re-using this foundation with this approach and so far, it’s been good. The lip gloss – love.
5) Most shopped at store (for makeup). Did you shop more in store or online? This year, it was Sephora; mostly online.
6) Did you spend less, the same, or more than other years? More, definitely more. Let’s just say that I re-upped for Rouge waaaaaaay earlier than I thought I would.
7) Rediscovered loves or underrated makeup discoveries NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer. I ran out of the NARS concealer near the beginning of the year and for the next few months after that, I went a little crazy trying out different concealers. Some worked fine and I could see myself reaching for them from time to time; others did not work out at all. C’est la vie. In the end, I realized the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer works best for me.
😎 A product you missed out on or haven't bought yet but really want The mini Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial. I misjudged how quickly it would sell out. Yes, I can purchase a full sized Babyfacial, but it’s just not the same – the mini was adorable!
9) Did your makeup routine change in any way? I focused more on skincare during the latter half of the year and as a result, ended up wearing very minimal makeup – most days, it was usually just my tinted sunblock, NARS concealer and a lippie, maybe a cushion compact or light layer of foundation if I needed more coverage and mascara to look more awake.
10) What makeup trend do you think will be big next year? Oh goodness, I dunno. Maybe more traditional lipstick and lip gloss (vs. matte lips / liquid lipsticks), bolder, cool toned colors
Ooh this is fun 🙂
1) Your favorite purchase of the year (try just 1!)
Farmacy Green Clean Balm
2) A purchase you regret- why?
Garner micellar water...doesn’t remove my makeup very well, too much rubbing
3) Most expensive purchase- was it worth the money?
Kiehls creme de Corp...Yes!! Dry skin lifesaver!
4) Most hyped product you bought- was it worth it?
If we’re talking instagram hype, then none
5) Most shopped at store (for makeup). Did you shop more in store or online?
Sephira, online more cuz of Ebates and the GWP
6) Did you spend less, the same, or more than other years?
About the same
7) Rediscovered loves or underrated makeup discoveries
Laura Mercier Caviar eye sticks (rediscover)
😎 A product you missed out on or haven't bought yet but really want
Farmacy honey drop moisturizer (the set that got away...)
9) Did your makeup routine change in any way?
Not really, maybe just less steps? Just simple cleanser, toner, eye cream, face cream and serum or oil
10) What makeup trend do you think will be big next year?
bold lips, minimal eye makeup
1) Your favorite purchase of the year (try just 1!)
2) A purchase you regret- why?
3) Most expensive purchase- was it worth the money? Simple human mirror, yep worth it for me the lighting in my bed room is pretty bad, this saves me from running to different rooms during makeup application.
4) Most hyped product you bought- was it worth it? I bought one of the Mothership palettes, I'm still on the fence with it, I does not have the same wear as my Viseart collection but it's sooo sparkly, and some of the colors are so cool. I still need to play with it more and remember to use eye primers- blah
5) Most shopped at store (for makeup). Did you shop more in store or online? More online than ever, Sephora got most of my cash this year but Spring and Dermstore are taking a bigger slice of the pie by carrying more products I like and having 20% off frequently...
6) Did you spend less, the same, or more than other years? Less, bent trying to stick to staples and not get sucked in with GWP's
7) Rediscovered loves or underrated makeup discoveries? Lancome effacernes concealer, I try others but just keep going back because it works so well for me. Sephora why don't you carry this anymore, teint idole is weak sauce?
😎 A product you missed out on or haven't bought yet but really want? KVD Haze
9) Did your makeup routine change in any way? Primer lots of primer loving the J one jelly pack.
10) What makeup trend do you think will be big next year? Glossy lips
1) Favorite purchase: MAC Face & Body foundation. It has become my HG of foundations.
2) Worst purchase: Sweet Peach Palette- the shadows are dry & drugstore quality.
3) Most expensive Purchase: Dyson Hair dryer and its worth the price.
4) Most hyped? Dyson Hair dryer and it met the reviews and expectations
5) Most shopped at store-Sephora and mostly online
6) Spent more this year
7) Underrated MU discovery- Sephora sponges. IMO they are better than the Beauty Blender. Oh and Laura Mercier cake liner. It has become my goto liner.
😎 What do I want to buy? Viseart eyeshadows. The price is too high for me but plan on caving next year to try them.
9) MU change, no not really but I did change my skincare. Added Differin to my skincare and it has made a good difference. Also less expensive moisturizers and they perfom jsut as well if not better than expensive ones, Cerave is my goto. Also began using oils under my moisturizers. Rosehip oil (like The Ordinary) is the bee knees
10) What MU trend will be big next year, honestly don't care or ever go by trends. Go with what works for me and my aging face.
