@deborah1957 Early 50s here, and my skincare routine’s a mix of different brands and price points. You can do that or stick with one brand; what matters most is finding specific products that work for your particular skin and budget. Here’s how I usually recommend folks plan a skincare routine: Understand your skin type/behavior - as we age, our skin naturally gets drier. But some people might still have skin that’s more oily on their whole face, or a combo of dry areas and oily areas, or balanced (not too dry or oily anywhere). And some of us have skin that’s very sensitive or reactive/inflammation-prone, or we’ve been diagnosed with certain skin conditions (rosacea, eczema, melasma, etc.). Example: my skin’s mostly-dry combo (my oily zone’s just on and around my nose; everywhere else is dry, except my forehead which is almost balanced) and reactive: certain ingredients, like lavender and other essential oils, irritate the heck outta my skin. Decide what you want skincare products to do for you - are there any specific issues you want to address, problems to resolve, or skin goals to meet? Example: I’m targeting large patches of hyperpigmentation, keeping my dry skin hydrated and moisturized, reducing surface redness, and trying to tame the grease factory in the middle of my face. Learn which ingredients can (or may) meet your goals/treat your issues - this can help you weed out a whole lotta stuff your skin doesn’t need, thus saving you time and money. There are plenty of good resources online… I can recommend a few later, if you’d like. Actually, for now lemme recommend my favorite database resource: INCIdecoder. You can look up products there and read about ingredients they contain. I don’t like that INCIdecoder assigns ranks (goodie, icky, superstar, etc.) to ingredients, but I’ve never noticed any “clean beauty” or brand-specific bias there and their info’s science-based. I definitely don’t recommend EWG or “clean beauty” apps like Yuka as resource for a few reasons. Find products that contain those ingredients - they don’t have to be from the same brand. Also, OTC “medical grade skincare” isn’t really a thing, so don’t be fooled by that marketing hook. And price =/= quality: there are some very effective low-cost products and ineffective expensive ones. The most expensive product in my routine is a retinaldehyde serum. The bones of a good routine are cleanser (PM, optional AM), moisturizer (AM & PM), and broad spectrum sunscreen (AM). For some folks, that’s all that’s needed. What do you currently use on your face?

Hi @TuksTuki ! Upfront disclaimer: I’m not a dietician or medical doctor, and you may wanna talk with one about your water intake. Do you like watermelon? It’s a great source of water. It’s not a 100% replacement for drinking water, but it’ll help keep you hydrated. If you have a medical condition that needs a restricted sugar diet, watermelon might even be a better choice than other hydrating raw fruits (oranges, cantaloupe, etc.) that contain more sugar per gram. One of my favorite things is cubed watermelon & tomatoes mixed together as a 2-ingredient fruit salad, plus a little salt & pepper. If you love lettuce as much as I do (I can eat a whole head of romaine as-is, no dressing necessary 😅), some of those are good water sources—though less hydrating than fruit. Staying hydrated is more of a challenge for me now that I’m in my 50s. Lately I’ve drunk less coffee than I used to, and it’s obvious that coffee was a main water source for me. Iced espresso helps: espresso can actually contain less caffeine than a regular cup of black coffee, surprisingly. (Variables apply there.) If you’re a coffee drinker and still do Starbucks, order an iced espresso with 1-3 shots (depending on time of day, to give your body time to process that caffeine before bedtime) in a grande or venti cup with extra ice and an extra splash of your choice of milk (I’m a soy milk drinker). An iced macchiato also works. Both cost much less than other espresso drinks and will hydrate you.

I just ordered the Biossance Rapid Radiance kit. I’m also looking at The Ordinary brand. I’m a mid-50s black woman with dull skin, visible pores on my cheeks next to nose and fine lines on my forehead. Most brands have skincare surveys on their website to narrow down products for you. That could help with your search.

It's excellent for me on top of Tretinoin. I use it alternating with SkinFix Barrier at night. I do not buy very expensive products EVER (though I know these moisturizers are still pricier than most). I worked in the beauty/skincare service industries for years, it is almost always unnecessary to spend more than $15 on any one skincare product; but everyone's needs are different. It's a trial-and-error, works for some but not others thing. And sometimes we just LOVE something, which is also ok (unless you're paying for sum like LaMer or LaPrarie- babe... NO. Get some Tret and a good moisturizer, save that $)
