Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

Read an article where my eyeliner is out of date for my age group.  I line my top eye only from one end to the other in any color on any given day.  Some days the line is thicker than others it just depends on how heavy my hand goes on that day.  I use a pot or a waterproof gel liner.  I love wearing makeup and do my entire face each workday morning or when I'm out with my husband.  Thoughts?

Re: Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

You. Look. Mah-velous!

Re: Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

@IROCKTHEISMANN You look absolutely radiant and very cool!

Please don’t listen to silly articles that are clearly outdated. If it makes you happy and makes you feel fabulous, you go for it!

I’m 47 (will be 48 in October) and I still love my black eyeliner on top lid, winged, smokey, smudged, with or without eyeshadow to soften the look, occasionally sharp... in my mind, I’m really 21 years young 🙂

Age is really just a number. I’m learning this every day ( but that’s a longer story!)

Additionally, my mother who is 68- she won’t leave the house without her liquid black perfect cat eyes... I’m still in awe of how she does it! She’s been wearing black eyeliner ( preferably liquid with a very thin brush) since the 1960’s... she had the cool beatnik look down perfectly. I’ve always called her a rock n roll mom! Lol. I’m more a fan of the way classic Sophia Loren or Brigitte Bardot styles...

Sorry for the rant, I just wanted to say you look lovely, don’t think you ever need to change because someone else thinks so. There is no rule for women to wear any makeup at all, no matter who or what is written, but if it makes one feel incredible, no matter the style... I say go for it. Go for the cool glamourised look, rock and roll, glitter and shimmers, anything really does go when it comes to creativity, and more importantly- how one feels about themselves when they look in a mirror.

Much love and respect... xx

Re: Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

@IROCKTHEISMANNYou look great!  Keep wearing that eyeliner.

RE: Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

Lol! I read a magazine article in 1984 (when I was 18) that said that women can’t wear light blonde hair or long hair after age 25(!)- just too old. It made me panic about my aging. Insane. Nonsense! I wore almost no eye makeup to work, and everyone asked me if I was sick. Where do they get this stuff?

Re: Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

Hi @IROCKTHEISMANN!

I echo what everyone else has said, you look great with eyeliner, ignore the article and do whatever makes you like and makes you feel good.  If you want to try something different, try using a dark eyeshadow and line your eyes with it using an angled brush.  It gives a soft look to your lined eyes.

Re: Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

"Read an article where my eyeliner is out of date for my age group."  In my humble opinion, it's the article that's out of date @IROCKTHEISMANN!  You look happy and lovely and you wear eyeliner on your top lid beautifully.  ❤️

Re: Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

You look pretty with eyeliner. I’m all hung-go for doing whatever makes us feel good and happy. It’s our faces. 🙃

My eyes have a lot of wrinkles, so I never do a wing, though I usually Tightline, and line the upper lid, then blend eyeshadow out over it to soften the line so it’s less harsh. 0886B0A0-534D-4A52-A071-45007BBF9257.jpeg lol

Re: Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

What foundation and concealer do you use? Skin looks great!

Re: Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

There I used Kat Von D Foundation and Bobbi Brown concealer.  What you're probably seeing is my skin care; however, since Sephora doesn't carry it and the other makeup place does and uses it in their spa treatments, I probably cannot mention it here.  🙂  Thank you for the compliment!

Re: Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

You are gorgeous!!!!!!

Re: Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

I love people who think they’re the official Adult Age-Appropriate Makeup Police. Bless their hearts. They’re usually the same folks who think they control what hair styles/colors, clothing, shoes, etc. are appropriate for various adult age groups. All that policing must be tough work! They should take a breather.

I’ll be 47 in 4 months. Not only will I keep wearing eyeliner whenever I want, I’ll still wear all those “too young” or “ages you 10 years” lipstick colors the AAAMP insist I give up. I see no problem with you or anyone else doing the same.

Re: Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

@IROCKTHEISMANN Forget about that article! I’m 53 and my mom is 79 and we both use eyeliner on the top lid ! It doesn’t age us at all ! Do whatever pleases you! Go ahead and shred the article!

Re: Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

@IROCKTHEISMANN @RGbrown I so want to wear gel/liquid eyeliner but I have a bit of creasing on the outer corner of one eye (my sleeping side). It’s almost invisible, to be honest, but it causes the liner to skip.  I’ve tried touching up the skips and it ends up looking like a hot mess. Do you guys have any tips?

Re: Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

@PinkEvergreen I have hooded eyes, crepey lids, and fine lines. Things that help me with liquid/gel liners (assuming you want a winged liner look):

1. Use a small angled brush (I use a MAC 208 or the larger 22) to apply the liner. I dip the brush against the liner tip, and then use the brush on my lid. Sometimes it’s easier to control a fairly stiff eye brush than a bendy liquid liner brush/felt tip. It’s much easier to stamp the liner over a creased/wrinkly bit with an angle brush. Once I get my outline down with the angled brush, I might fill in with the liner tip or keep using the brush.

Success partly depends on how quick-drying your liner is, but I’ve never had a liner instantly dry on the brush before it reached my lid.

2. Don’t pull/stretch your lid skin a lot while applying liner. I’m sure you already know that but yeah, it’ll look great until you release your skin. I just press my finger between my temple and outer eye socket corner to hold the skin stiller.

3. A little concealer + setting powder where you’d place your wing can provide a smoother base for liner. This sometimes helps me quickly lay down liner.

4. Try something like Tarte’s clay pot eyeliner, which is designed to be used with a brush. I don’t like the bent-stem brush it comes with, so I use one of my angled brushes instead. I haven’t used it in a while but it does a pretty nice wing. I should use it this weekend for the heck of it.

5. Remember, you can always clean up your wing with a tiny bit of concealer if it bleeds a lot. Every felt-tip liquid liner I’ve tried bleeds during application. I use the NARS liquid liner often and always have to clean it up with concealer—though it doesn’t bleed as much as others I’ve tried.

6. If you use a felt-tip liner instead of an angled brush, try using a very light hand to lay down your wing outline. Whenever I get a new felt-tip liner, I have to draw practice wings on my hands (or face, if I’m willing to wash it all off afterward) to get a feel for how much product the tip deposits with different amounts of pressure. Otherwise that stuff will bleed all over my eye area.

Hope some of this helps!

Re: Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

@WinglessOne Thank you for taking the time to respond in such detail ❤️

I'm definitely going to try your and @RGbrown‘s suggestion to try brush application. I already do this with pencil eyeliner, so hopefully I can get the hang of it quickly with liquid eyeliner.

Regarding number 3, using concealer and setting powder to create a smoother base — I can’t believe I never thought of that! It makes perfect sense. I think that could do the trick right there 👍

I will also definitely add a Tarte clay pot liner to my loves list. That’s a great idea, too.

As for testing out a new liner before application, I sure learned that lesson the hard way with Urban Decay Razor Sharp Liquid Eyeliner. I had just finished a full application, was about to go out, and decided to add just a bit of that eyeliner, which I had just purchased and never used. With such a thin point, what could go wrong, right? A big, horrendous BLOB is what. That was not a fun moment 😂

Thank you again for all your input!! 🙏

Re: Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

@PinkEvergreen Oh, that Urban Decay liner got me too, in exactly the same scenario. 😄  That learned me.

I hope the concealer tip works! Sometimes I extend my eyeshadow primer out to where I’ll put my wing, instead of using concealer there. Only problem with that is the off-color cast the primer leaves behind: if my wing doesn’t fully cover it, I dust the remainder with an eyeshadow that matches my skin.

Happy winging!

Re: Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

@PinkEvergreenUnidentified

I rarely wear liquid liner...while I don't believe in set "cut off" ages, I do have troubles with it from time to time due to some lines and "soft" eyelids, so I don't mess with it often. I also prefer a softer look to my liner that liquid doesn't provide. I find gel pencils to be my current fave, though I also adore gel pot liners. I find I get my best results when I make sure my pencil is freshly sharpened (aka as fine a point as possible), and make my line a bit skinnier than I normally would. That way if I have to do any touch ups from skipping, etc, I still have a little leeway to make my line broader without going overboard.

It takes some practice, but I also find that going over the line backwards, from the outer corner in, can greatly smooth out any skips or jumps. Hitting that wrinkle from both directions evens out the coverage 😂

Re: Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

@RGbrown Thats the perfect description: soft. I don’t have super-crepey skin or deep wrinkles. It’s primarily that softness that makes it so difficult!

I pretty much gave up on liquid liner and switched to pencil (Marc Jacobs and UD mainly). While I do like it, I really envy the people who can have that sharp cat eye with liquid liner. Are you able to achieve that with a sharp eye pencil? I honestly never thought to try. Let me know 😊

Re: Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

@PinkEvergreenUnidentified

You will never fool anyone into thinking you're wearing liquid liner, no, but I can get reasonably sharp line with a finer point. You can also try loading a brush with your pencil and applying that way 😊

Re: Eyeliner across top lid at age 47?

Heck Im 49 and wear glitter eyeshadow. I bet that is in the list of 'donts' too!

I love what Maye Musk says in the Olay ad, 'They say at a certain age you just stop caring, I wonder what age that is'. Shes strutting across the street, all glammed up and looking phenomenal, at age 70. Great words to keep in your head, especially on those days when youre slapping the warpaint on and a little voice in your head says 'why are you still doing this??'.

Because I still care and because glitter rocks!
