Do keratins cause cancer

This is a complex question. Keratin itself no, is not harmful. Our hair is made up the majority of Keratin Proteins. 

You are however asking about the service in salons. This depends what country you live in. 
The biggest danger with Keratin smoothing treatments is the chemical compounds in them and whether regulations where you are ban certain ingredients. 
I do not live in the USA, Formaldehyde cannot be in any Keratin treatments where I am - however there are dozens of names for Formaldehyde and sometimes they slip into the country in products ( Sephora has one I know of) and it is what it is. There is no governing body when it comes to haircare. 
If you are in the US, it is not banned outside of California I believe. The issue because when formaldehyde is heated it emits a toxic gas which enters our lungs and becomes dangerous. Take from that what you will.
