Questions Wanted: Clean Fragrance

**Update: Questions are welcome until Wednesday, 8/15!

Happy FRI-YAY, BIC!

I don’t know about you but I was so excited to see Clean at Sephora launch this summer! You may not know this but fragrance plays a big role in this new category. We have a handful of brands that Sephora considers clean according to our guidelines.

According to our guidelines, if a product get the clean stamp of approval is must be formulated without the use of PTFE/PFOA, styrene, polyacrylamide/acrylamide, acetaldehyde, acetonitrile, methylene chloride, benzalkonium chloride, toluene, resorcinol, acetone, butoxyethanol, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, methyl cellosolve, methylisothiazolinone/methylchloroisothiazolinone, mercury and mercury compounds (thimerosal), bisphenol A (BPA), and animal fats, oils, and musks.

Here’s a list of those fragrance brands:

I know that “clean” can also be confusing (LOOK at that no-no ingredient list!) so we wanted to get your questions on clean fragrance. Please ask your questions until Thursday, 8/9. Once all questions are in I will circle back with Sephora employees and the brands to get answers to the common questions we see in this thread. If you have a specific question for one of our clean fragrance brands feel free to ask that as well!

What do you want to know about our clean fragrance brands and the clean fragrance category?

BONUS Q: What's your favorite clean brand of all time? This can be any type of brand from skincare to supplements.. go crazy! 🙂

Re: Questions Wanted: Clean Fragrance

Yes @bakeamuffinI would like to know the answer about the citrus ingredients that are used in perfume as well 🙂

To make me think I have less exposure to harmful chemicals, I avoid spraying perfume on my neck now and only spray on the inside of my elbows. From experience of using sunscreen and having minor skin issues there, the decolletage seems more sensitive than the face. IMHO, but others might have it differently 🙂

I still love my perfumes!

Re: Questions Wanted: Clean Fragrance

It looks like a minor deviation of the Dirty Dozen with a few extras, @KatieBT? My question would be this: do any of these ingredients occur as a result of the perfume compounding process? That might be good to know. I am so glad Sephora has implemented Clean. It's next to impossible to cut out EVERYTHING that is harmful, but if I can do a little bit to decrease my exposure to toxic ingredients, that is worth it. With a  mini-Sephora fan in the house too, who loves to experiment with makeup, perfumes and skin care, it is even more important to me that the products available are as clean and pure as possible. Thank you 🙂

Re: Questions Wanted: Clean Fragrance

@Aaliaa asked what I would like to know:  Why are these the ingredients that were chosen as "unclean"?  Also, is this a living list, i.e., will it be updated on a regular basis?

Re: Questions Wanted: Clean Fragrance

Those may not be reported publicly but to few ppl knowledge, they highly toxic just like deodorant with aluminum. They don't only cause allergic or sneeze.  Asthma but cancer too . It is linked to a lot of toxic ingredients messing with hormone

Re: Questions Wanted: Clean Fragrance

Deodorants do not contain aluminum. You may be thinking of antiperspirant. There have been some discredited studies that suggested aluminum can increase the likelihood of Alzheimer's or breast cancer. More research has been done on those studies and on those claims. The Alzheimer's study was completely disproven and the claims have been dismissed by the medical and scientific community. The medical and scientific community has also not been able to find any link between aluminum in deodorant and breast cancer (or any other health issue, tbh!)

These myths about aluminum are old and outdated - old wives' tales that people keep spreading despite the fact that even the American Cancer Society can't identify any risk in wearing antiperspirant or deodorant.

If you prefer products without aluminum, that's perfectly fine. I'm glad you are able to find products that you like! But please don't misinform people about health or safety risks that do not exist.

Questions Wanted: Clean Fragrance

Boscia is my favorite clean skin care brand.

Re: Questions Wanted: Clean Fragrance

@KatieBT I have a quick question! Are products with the clean stamp of approval free of phthalates? I don’t see this on the above list, though I have noticed it on some of the product pages. Thanks so much!

Re: Questions Wanted: Clean Fragrance

@KatieBT

I understand why Clean is a catagory for Cosmetics, Skincare, Haircare. I dont quite understand why for fragrances? 🤷‍♀️ I'm not someone who sprays fragrance onto my skin, I spray onto my clothing, this may have to do with my confusion.

Re: Questions Wanted: Clean Fragrance

@GG84, when I test a perfume, I spray on skin and I think most people do? Even though I'll spray fragrance in my hair, when I'm smelling a fragrance, I know I'm breathing it in. If I didn't enjoy it sooooooooo much, I'd avoid fragrances entirely.

Re: Questions Wanted: Clean Fragrance

I actually received a sample of Clean Reserve Acqua Neroli in a recent order and I really enjoy it! As someone who is sensitive to strong smells, it is really important to me I wear items with either natural scents or very lightly scented. Strong, unnatural, or chemically scents are really tough on my head and sinuses. I haven’t tried any of the other fragrance brands listed, but I’d be interested in checking them out.

Re: Questions Wanted: Clean Fragrance

The ingredient list is interesting  and I'd be interested to understand why specific ingredients were picked and if sub-categories of ingredients were looked at (for example fatty alcohols vs drying alcohols) across the 'clean' definition. @KatieBT

My favourite Clean products that Sephora offers are DE Protini, D-Bronzi and C-Tango .
