Skin Care

Is it safe to use a dark spot corrector with a retinol based skin care routine?

Re: Skin Care

Hi @jessmommy ! It depends on the products in your routine, the ingredients in the dark spot corrector, and your skin’s tolerance level.

Some folks’ skin can’t handle too many active ingredients at once, or a chemical exfoliant (AHA or BHA, or even PHA) layered under retinol. Patch test the dark spot corrector on your wrist, inner arm, or even your neck before using it your face.

Also, it’s best to avoid layering 2 different retinol products on the same skin as this can cause lots of irritation—so make sure the dark spot corrector doesn’t contain a retinoid (retinol, granactive retinoid, retinaldehyde, etc.). Well, unless you plan to use the corrector on an area of skin that doesn’t get your usual retinol product. I use a retinaldehyde serum everywhere on my face except my eye area, where I use a gentler retinol product.

If the corrector has no retinoids and your skin tolerates it as part of your retinol routine, then you can probably use it.
