Question regarding Sunday Riley Luna Oil

Hello everyone! 🙂 the Sunday Riley Luna Oil was recently recommended to me here in this group to help with my dry, red skin. My skin is pretty dry but it’s not to the point where it ever flakes or anything. Just general dryness and my cheeks are red constantly no matter what. Actually it’s strange because my right cheek is a lot more red than the left and it’s the redness is mainly in the cheek area closest to my nose (I’m not sure if that helps or not). The red areas are not anymore dry than the rest of my face and they don’t itch or hurt. I have never had an acne problem either so I don’t know where it comes from or why it’s there but it’s really hard to cover with foundation. Anyway, I did take the recommendation and the person said that I could use a moisturizer cream over top of the Luna oil at night as well. I did not do that the first night I used it because I wanted to see if the Luna oil reduced redness by itself without a redness reducing cream. The label claims that after the first night of use, you should see reduced redness. To my surprise, I did actually see a huge difference in that area... it was almost completely gone! I was shocked that my redness was basically gone after just one night. What I didn’t like was that my face did not feel moisturized at all when I woke up. It wasn’t more dry than normal or anything, but it just didn’t feel like I had applied anything to my face the night before. This could be why I was told I “could” use a cream moisturizer over it but I wasn’t sure if it was 100% necessary and I also didn’t want to the first night because again, I wanted to see if the oil helped the redness alone without wondering which product actually helped with redness. I didn’t use the Luna oil last night because I heard that if your face is not used to Retinol, it shouldn’t be used nightly at first. Just slowly introduced. I’ll be honest I have no clue if my face has experienced anything with retinol before since I’m so new to the whole skincare thing. But to be safe I didn’t use it the next night but I did use the Olehenricksen night Retin-ALT cream instead since it’s a night moisturizer and it contains an alternative to Retinol. When I put it on, I loved it. It was super gentle and soft on my face and it did not burn, itch or anything. My redness at that point was still gone and my face felt SO moisturized. That’s all I used and when I woke up this morning, my face was bright red again in the same areas as before using Luna. I was so upset and I was shocked because like I said the cream did not burn at all or anything and the redness didn’t return when I put it on... just the morning after. I felt super moisturized though... but I reversed the problem I was trying to fix. I use other Olehenricksen products during the day and they do not irritate my skin at all, I love them so much. Even after I used the Luna oil and the redness was gone, when I applied my truth serum and vitamin c cream the redness was still gone. I’m almost wondering if I have a sensitivity to the retinol alternative? Because that’s the only thing I chanced between my night and morning routines. So I’ve pretty much come to the conclusion that I should definitely be applying another moisturizer on top of the Luna oil, but for the nights that I don’t use Luna, what night moisturizing cream or oil can I use that will keep my redness at bay? I was recommended Dr. Jart Cicapair Tiger Grass products as well, but they have a color correcting treatment, a serum, and camo drips. Idk which one to use, also I don’t know how that would work over the Luna cream as a night moisturizer. Unfortunately when I was at Sephora purchasing the Luna oil, NONE of the 3 girls working there had any advice for me regarding skincare. Like I would tell them what I was trying to achieve and nobody offered up advice. One girl actually was like “usually when I am trying to decide what product to choose I just go online at the Sephora website and look at reviews.” Yeah I had already been doing that all day and I’m still doing that today. So frustrating... maybe none of them had an education in skincare. Idk. Anyway, that’s why I only ended up with the Luna oil that day as well as an Olehenricksen set. So what moisturizer can I use at night over my Luna oil AND on the nights that I can’t use it that will help my redness?

Re: Question regarding Sunday Riley Luna Oil

@ellex0 REN CLEAN SKINCARE - Evercalm™ Anti-Redness Serum

REN CLEAN SKINCARE - Evercalm™ Overnight Recovery Balm might be alternatives to look at.

The Evercalm line from Ren is made for reducing redness.

Re: Question regarding Sunday Riley Luna Oil

@ellex0 Is your redness due to a skin condition?

RE: Re: Question regarding Sunday Riley Luna Oil

I don’t think so- I have no idea where it came from. I have no allergies and I know because I recently did bloodwork and did a full allergy panel and I showed no allergies. As far as skin conditions... I’ve never been seen by a doctor or dermatologist in regards to skin problems. But I’ve never felt like I needed to. My whole life I somehow managed to be blessed with great skin with no issues. No acne, no redness, and my skin was not dry or oily. I had normal skin and very often went without makeup in high school. It wasn’t until the past couple years (I’m 28) that I noticed the redness. This is just the first time I’ve tried to get rid of it. But it doesn’t sting or burn or hurt me ever. It doesn’t have a different texture to it. Could it just be a form of hyperpigmentation??

Hi @ellex0

It seems like a dermatologist could better pinpoint the cause of your redness. If you have access to one, I would go to see if its some type of eczema. Years ago,  I used to have red cheeks and nose from drinking alcohol and drinking alot is detrimental to skin health. That is  why I stopped drinking all together. The best moisturizer that I used during that period and when my skin was dehydrated was La Mer Crème de la Mer Moisturizer 1 oz/ 30 mL. That was my top fix all until I changed my routine this year. I wish I could be of more help but I haven't tried other anti redness creams. Ole henrickson is a great brand. Unfortunately, the one brand I am very sensitive to is Sunday Riley.

Thank you! No worries, this was more helpful than you think. I most likely will see a dermatologist, but I would really like to try to correct the issue prior to that. It's strange because I used to drink almost daily but over the past 8 months I have not drank alcohol once. I also quit drinking because it wasn't until I started drinking a lot that my skin took a turn.... I am going to try to drink more water, I know that I don't drink enough of that. I'm sure the previous drinking habits did factor in the redness starting but there could be something else, just because I've stopped drinking and it's still hanging around. I will try the REN product that you recommended. Well, i'll take a look at and see how much it is lol. I've dropped a lot on skincare the past couple weeks 🙂 thank you again.
