Oil Cleansing and Exfoliating

Hi Beauties? Does anyone have any tips for products/methods with oil cleansing and exfoliating? I currently use Biossanceโ€™s oil cleanser which I love, but have found that once Iโ€™ve washed off makeup, any exfoliators either donโ€™t penetrate the oil or get weirdly gunky. Would love to hear your tips!

Re: Oil Cleansing and Exfoliating

I would suggest doing a second cleanse with a water-based cleanser after your oil cleanse.  This will ensure any residue from your makeup will be removed. Your skin will then be able to absorb any other products you use. I read that you like the oil feeling on your skin. Perhaps finishing off your routine with a facial oil is a great option for you!

RE: Oil Cleansing and Exfoliating

Hi! Am glad to hear you are using the oil cleansing method. I am wondering if you are following up with a water-based foaming cleanser afterward.

RE: Oil Cleansing and Exfoliating

I usually am good with just the oil cleansing! I have combination skin and was really prone to breakouts before oil cleansing. Since Iโ€™ve started, I donโ€™t go for squeaky clean any more as I could never seem to fully rehydrate and would then just break out worse!

Re: RE: Oil Cleansing and Exfoliating

@JenSasser  I felt the same way, so when I double-cleanse I use a cream cleanser as the second wash... best of both worlds โœจ

Maybe try it that way on days you're planning to exfoliate, then use a facial oil afterward? My skin is balanced now but used to be pretty oily, and it seems to like night oils better than the sleeping masks that have gotten popular. Sounds like you're on the right track with listening to what your skin likes.

Re: Oil Cleansing and Exfoliating

I use the Shiseido anti/oxi oil, not the Biossance, so YMMV. I apply the oil, emulsify with a tiny bit of water, before rinsing I use a damp konjac sponge for a gentle physical exfoliation (and to ensure I'm getting allll the makeup off), and then I rinse everything away. Gets my skin squeaky clean!

For added exfoliation oomph, esp. during winter when my skin is dry and heavy nighttime moisturizers cause some of the pores around my nose to act up, I also use a glycolic or AHA toner right after cleansing. The Ren one that is/was available as a sample with the NOFOMO code is a favourite (Ready Steady Glow AHA Tonic). Trialing The Ordinary's Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution right now, seems to be working pretty well so far! (Note: I also put SPF 50 -- IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better -- on my face every day to prevent sun damage from the AHA/glycolic prodyucts.)

It sounds like the Biossance cleansing oil is not rinsing away sufficiently, perhaps? I've never had oil residue left on my face after cleansing with the Shiseido for it to interact with anything.

Thanks for the reply! I like have the oils still on my skin after cleansing, but maybe I need to rethink the order in days when I exfoliate!
