Long-lasting makeup + sunscreen that doesn’t pill??

Hi everyone! I’m trying to figure out how to make my makeup last all day, especially when I’m wearing sunscreen underneath.

Every time I layer sunscreen with my makeup, it either starts pilling or my foundation separates and looks patchy after a few hours. I really want something that holds up well throughout the day but still protects my skin.

I’m looking for:

  • A good long-lasting base routine (primer, foundation, setting spray, etc.)
  • A sunscreen that layers well under makeup without pilling
  • Any tips on application order or techniques that help everything stay smooth

Right now I’m considering using something like a setting spray with SPF so I can reapply without messing up my makeup, but I’m not sure what actually works.

If anyone has products or routines that keep your makeup looking good all day without breaking apart, I’d really appreciate it!

Thank you!!

@NickyDaut @What products are you currently using?

Keep your base simple. Light moisturizer > sunscreen > makeup. Avoid stacking too many serums or thick layers underneath. Look for a sunscreen that has a lighter, more fluid texture and gives a soft natural or slightly matte finish (heavier or very silicone-heavy ones tend to pill more under makeup). Apply sunscreen and let it set for a few minutes, then press your foundation in with a sponge instead of brushing, that helps keep the layers intact. Setting sprays with SPF are fine for touch-ups but they don’t replace your main sunscreen layer (think of them as extra/not your base protection).

Omg I had this exact problem for the longest time 😭 it’s usually not just the products, it’s how they layer together.

What helped me most was switching to a sunscreen that kind of acts like a primer. The ones that are more silicone-y (like the Supergoop Unseen or the e.l.f. invisible one) sit really smooth under makeup and don’t pill.

For making makeup last all day, a strong setting spray makes a huge difference. The Urban Decay All Nighter or the Charlotte Tilbury one both keep everything in place way longer.

My routine that actually doesn’t separate:

  • Light moisturizer (let it fully dry)
  • Sunscreen (wait like 5–10 mins before anything else)
  • Primer only if needed
  • Foundation in thin layers (press it in, don’t rub)
  • Light powder
  • Setting spray

Biggest tips:

  • Let each layer dry before adding the next
  • Don’t mix a bunch of different formulas (that’s what causes pilling)
  • Use less product than you think
  • Don’t over-blend your foundation

For reapplying SPF, sprays are okay but not super reliable. I usually use a sunscreen stick and tap it in so it doesn’t mess up my makeup.

Once I started letting my sunscreen actually set and stopped over-layering, everything looked way smoother and lasted way longer.
