Help me find a new skin care routine!

Spoiler

I am 29. I have dry skin which I would say is somewhat sensitive. I am allergic to anything with chemical SPF. My skin is not sensitive in the way that fragrance bothers it but sometimes certain products will dry my skin out.
I for the most part have clear skin, but I do have redness on my cheeks and get the occasional patch of pimples usually if I’m trying a new product my skin doesn’t like or if I get stressed.

Ive tried drunk elephant (which my skin loved but my bank account did not) I’ve tried first aid beauty, skinfix, cetaphil, the ordinary and quite a few others but I’ve never found a consistent routine that I live and breathe for.

At 29 I’m looking for a routine that will help my skin stay hydrated and bouncy/ youthful while also not clogging my pores.

it’s so hard to find anything when so many products are viral and so much information is out there on what you should be using for each concern.

any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: Help me find a new skin care routine!

I totally get how overwhelming it can be to find a routine with all the viral hype and conflicting advice. For hydration and redness, have you tried a simple routine with a focus on barrier repair? Something like a gentle cleanser (like Vanicream or La Roche-Posay Toleriane), a hydrating serum with glycerin or hyaluronic acid, and a rich, non-comedogenic moisturizer? For SPF, try a physical sunscreen (zinc-based) since chemical ones don’t work for you.

Also, how do you feel about adding a low-strength retinol for youthful skin? It’s great for anti-aging, but I’d start slow to avoid irritation.

Re: Help me find a new skin care routine!

@RebeccaAnnGrace I would try a more classic line if skin care.  Have you tried a hyaluronic acid?  The INKEY List Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Hydrating Face Serum

A lot about skincare depends on climate and season. If you don't have a humidifier in your bedroom and live in a dry climate and)or heat your home in the winter get one.

Re: Help me find a new skin care routine!

@RebeccaAnnGrace, have you spoken with a Sephora Beauty Advisor about your concerns, yet?

Re: Help me find a new skin care routine!

Hi @RebeccaAnnGrace, completely hear you on the amount of information out there. On the one hand, it's great to have access to information, for our own education. On the other hand, it's just a ton of info coming at you. Thanks so much for sharing about your skin type and skin concerns; very helpful. You mentioned that your skin responded welll to Drunk Elephant products. Would you mind sharing your Drunk Elephant routine? That might help give us an idea of what sort of products were working well for your skin.

I love mineral sunscreens.❤️  My current favorites are:

Summer Fridays ShadeDrops Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Mineral Milk Sunscreen 1.7 oz / 50 mL - it's on the thinner side but not so thin that it's super runny. It offers good protection and layers well with makeup.

OLEHENRIKSEN Banana Bright Mineral Face Sunscreen SPF 30 1.7 oz / 50 mL - does a lovely job of blurring while providing sun protection.

Saint Jane Beauty Luxury Sun Ritual Pore Smoothing Face Sunscreen SPF 30 1.7 oz / 50 mL

Kosas DreamBeam Silicone-Free Mineral Sunscreen SPF 40 with Ceramides and Peptides 1.3 oz / 40 mL - has good anti-aging ingredients and is free of silicones.

Saie Sunvisor Radiant Moisturizing Face Sunscreen SPF 35 1.35 oz/ 40 mL #(also available in a mini version) - this has a lovely illuminating / glowy quality to it that works well as a primer as well as a sunblock

A Korean skincare brand, not available at Sephora, but I have been loving Etude Sunprise Mild Airy Finish Sun Milk for years! In the summer, I often mix it with Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi for a sunkissed glow and SPF.

Re: Help me find a new skin care routine!

Thank you for the response, I will definitely look into some of the products you have recommended.

my drunk elephant routine was

During the day I would use;

No. 9, Jelly cleanser

C-firma vitamin c serum

Then I would finish with either the protini, or the B hydra.

at night I would use;

No. 9 Jelly cleanser

I would rotate between the TLC resurfacing serum, and the virgin face oil or I would use the A-passioni retinol cream and the F balm water facial mask.

which is probably the most products I’ve ever used for my routines but my skin was clear and hydrated. But the $$

Re: Help me find a new skin care routine!

This is really helpful @RebeccaAnnGrace; thank you! I don't know if I'll be able to provide a comparable product for all the Drunk Elephant skincare you love, but here are some products that may be of interest to you -

AM routine:

No. 9 Jelly Cleanser -

C Firma vitamin C serum

B Hydra Serum

Protini

PM routine:

TLC resufacing serum

virgin marula

  • The Ordinary 100% Cold-Pressed Virgin Marula Oil
  • Trader Joe's Marula Oil

retinol

  •  Unfortunately, my skin doesn't tolerate retinol products so I don't have a dupe for you here

Fbalm water facial mask

This is a lot of new products at once. If you are near a Sephora store, you may want to see if your store carries these items and if you can get a sample to test first before committing to a full size.

With any new skincare product, you'll want to start off slow and just introduce one product at a time - one every 2-3 weeks, so you can see how your skin responds to it. By introducing one product at a time, if you experience a breakout, you'll be better able to identify the likely culprit or cause.

Re: Help me find a new skin care routine!

@RebeccaAnnGrace just a little BIC tip... if you're replying to someone or want someone specific to see your post you can tag them by using the @ symbol and then the names that pop up automatically are going to be the ones of people on the thread you're on for example @itsfi pops up in the list since she's responded to you earlier.

By the way... she's got some great SPF recommendations up there!

Re: Help me find a new skin care routine!

Thanks for the tag @missjeanie. btw, what physical / mineral SPF are you liking these days?

Re: Help me find a new skin care routine!

@itsfi I'm currently going through a bottle of the Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisturizer SPF 47 2 oz/ 60 mL , It's a standby for me.  Easy to access and adds some moisture during the cold winter.  I was going to say it's not really a favourite... but I've repurchased it quite a few times.

That said, I'm not picky with my SPF being mineral or chemical.  My running favourite spf is the Rohto Mentholatum Skin Aqua Tone Up UV Essence SPF 50+PA++++, in either the mint or purple.  It's between 10$ and 15$ on Stylevanna and a tube lasts quite nicely and it's easy for me to wear weather it's winter or summer.

From Sephora I really enjoyed a few deluxe sizes of the #CAY SKIN Isle Glow Face Moisturizer SPF 45 with Sea Moss and Niacinamide 1.5 oz / 45 mL last fall.  I might pick up a full size during the spring sale.  And then I'll also be looking for the Sephora Collection Sun Safety Kit as well.  I like having a few mini's around to toss in a handbag and maybe find a new favourite!
