Help! I have sun spots!

Just noticed sun spots on my forehead! which creams can help them go away? Plus is La Mer worth the splurge?

Re: Help! I have sun spots!

I purchased Sunday Riley Good Genes to use in conjunction with their Tidal cream and both together have really worked for my pigmentation sun spots. They were BAD all over my cheeks, nose and upper lip. It’s been about two months now and it’s a noticeable difference and it’s a relatively affordable option!

@SherylAllan

For dark spots from sun damage - I've not had any personal results for my sun spots with vitamin C products. Fraxel laser worked extremely well for my mother (and a dermatologist friend says it's really the most effective thing) but it's very expensive. I've been thinking about taking the plunge on it. Retin-A, which I do use, does help with hyperpigmentation but it's prescription only, and you have to get past the several month disgusting peeling phase before you see any results.

In terms of La Mer - I happen to love the stuff, as does my mother, and use it religiously but it's honestly just a nice, heavy moisturizer. I don't think that there is any magic to it and is probably not worth the price tag, but it makes my skin feel so amazing that I've kept on using it despite the expense. When I've used it in the evening, my skin is baby soft when I wake up in the morning.

Hey I can a sample since my store doesnt carry that brand(but had a bottle in the back?) and I have very dry skin and my skin drank.it.up. which would you say are the must have products?

Re: Hey I can a sample since my store doesnt carry that brand...

Original crème de la mer - I've tried both the soft cream and the gel crème as well and I feel like they're both really just weaker versions of the original so you have to use more. With the original, you need extremely little but you need to warm it up between your fingers and work it into your skin. A jar lasts much longer than with the other two and it does a better job of deep moisturing. I don't think the moisturizing lotion (the one that comes with the pump) is worth the money.

Renewal oil - I mix a drop into my crème de la mer and the two are amazing together and do double duty in terms of getting my dry skin moisturized in the winter. I also add a drop into foundation if I'm having a dry day and it makes a huge difference.

The concentrate - This probably my favorite serum I've ever used but it has an eye watering price ($490 for the 1.7 oz bottle) so I stopped using it after I got through my first bottle. Definitely thinking about going back though...

Revitalizing mask - I don't use it as a mask, more like a nighttime moisturizer. It works amazing.

I've also tried the eye concentrate and the eye balm intense - both great eye creams but I don't think they're life changing or worth the price.

Re: Help! I have sun spots!

@SherylAllan It really depends on the person and the skin concern.  My Mom and I love La Mer.

Re: Help! I have sun spots!

Hi @SherylAllan, I just saw a dermatologist for a number of concerns, including what might be the first sign of a dark spot. Below is what was recommended to me:

Hydroquinone can be used to help fade dark spots bu it can fade any color skin, so it's important to keep it confined only to the areas which are darker than your normal tone. Over the counter 2% hydroquinone can be purchase (one brand is Ambie); alternatively a prescription can be sought for 4% hydroquinone. Also, with continuous use, you can develop ochronosis (paradoxical darkening that occurs from overuse of the medication). A strategy to help avoid this is to use hydroquinone for 1-2 months of continuous usage followed by a minimum 1 month break." My concerns don't get into cosmetic procedures (i.e. not medically necessary) like Intense Pulse Light (or sometimes called Broadband Light) to treat skin discoloration.

The dermatologist told me that he can't prevent past sun damage and encouraged sun protective measures to prevent sunburns and reduce the risk of cancer, including sunscreen with SPF 50+ reapplied every 2 hours (or more frequently depending on activity), sun protective clothing (including broad brimmed hats) and seeking shade and minimizing sun exposure during peak hours.

The info above is not a substitute for an appointment with a dermatologist where your skin is assessed and specific concerns addressed. 🙂

Re: Help! I have sun spots!

@SherylAllan

Look for Vitamin C to help lighten/even skin tone. Sunscreen is imperative as well...otherwise you're just getting more spots while trying to treat the existing ones.

No, La Mer is not worth it. Check out Nivea Cream instead if you like the formula 😄
