HYPERPIGMENTATION & DARK SPOT CORRECTOR

I’m in desperate need for recommendations on color correcting skincare that can help the hyper-pigmentation around my mouth. Being south Asian, I have to do a lot of color-correcting before applying foundation otherwise I get really ashy. I’d like to try a skincare product that can help eliminate this for me.

I've recently read some research suggesting that maybe hydroquinone isn't as effective as previously thought.  I think it's more of a skin-lightener than dark spot corrector. Anyway.

Sunscreen is of the utmost importance.

I think there are three active skincare ingredients you should incorporate into your skincare routine.

Niacinamide

Vitamin C

Azelaic acid 

Niacinamide and Vitamin C can not only be used together, they have a synergistic effect.  Also, research shows that using vitamin C (or other strong antioxidants) dynamically protects you from UV damage -- not that you can skip sunscreen, but having vitamin C on your face during the day ups your skin's resilience from sun damage. 

Azelaic acid is not heard about nearly as much, but it is prescribed by dermatologists in formulations stronger than 10% for hyper pigmentation and to suppress melanin. The ordinary and Paula's choice both make a very good 10% formula.

I love the Super Goop Cc cream. I wanted to love the setting spray. It is literally the only thing I’ve ever returned to Sephora. It smells like something you would marinate lamb in. It also has a heavy feeling, like your face is dirty or sticky. I also have hyperpigmentation, I used Hydroquinone and every other skin product that claimed to help. Hands down without question the best product is Ole Henricksen a brighter truth regimen. You can try it for 34$ can’t beat that! In my opinion you can skip the cleanser. I like L’Oréal brighten and detox clay cleanser. The moisturizer and truth serum is where it’s at!

When it comes to hyperpigmentation, you need to take a multi-pronged approached.  Meaning, you not only need to think about how to treat the areas that you have, but also need to work on preventing them from worsening and developing new areas.  You don't want to waste a lot of time, effort, and money getting rid of them, just to have them come back, right?

To treat your existing areas, a serum with 2% Hydroquinone is what most dermatologists would recommend.  I like MURAD - Rapid Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Serum This works to break down the pigment. AHA treatments that exfoliate and encourage cell turnover with further enhance the process, Sunday Riley Good Genes All-In-One Lactic Acid Serum For Dark Spots And Uneven Texture 1.7 oz / 50 ml But all of this will be in vain if you don't wear sunscreen!!  These areas will darken when exposed to UV light, and some of the treatments will make them even more sensitive, so don't skip this!!  And don't forget to re-apply.  I keep SUPERGOOP! - Defense Refresh Setting Mist Broad Spectrum SPF 50in my purse and at the office.  And don't be afraid to see a dermatologist.  Hyperpigmention can be due to hormone imbalances, an inflammatory response, or something else entirely.  Good luck!
