Is your skin also very sensitive, to the point where it stings/burns to touch?
What’s your current skincare routine, from cleanser to sunscreen?
Do you have a budget/price cap for a product?
Just wondering if your skin’s red due to overuse of a certain product (example: over-exfoliating with an AHA like glycolic acid or lactic acid can cause all kinds of badness), or if you might be sensitive to an ingredient in one of your products. Or, you could have an underlying condition with redness as a symptom; you’ll need a board certified dermatologist or primary care doctor to diagnose that for you and help you with personalized treatment options.
In general, here are some ingredients that can help reduce redness, depending on the underlying cause:
Azelaic acid - very helpful for folks with rosacea (a skin condition that causes redness). Also helps reduce acne scar discoloration. Available over-the-counter at 10% strength in products like Paula's Choice 10% Azelaic Acid Booster 1 oz/ 30 mL, Peach Slices Redness Relief Azelaic Acid Serum, The INKEY List SuperSolutions 10% Azelaic Serum Redness Relief Solution 1 oz / 30 mL, etc. Or a doctor can prescribe a 15-20% strength product, if necessary.
Centella asiatica - aka gotu kola, tiger grass, or cica. A good anti-inflammatory ingredient. My skin’s favorite product is COSRX PureFit Cica Serum, but also consider #Dr. Jart+ Cicapair™ Cooling Gel Moisturizer for Redness 1.69 oz / 50 ml (the only Dr Jart cica product I’ll recommend because the others contain citrus essential oils that can worsen redness, depending on your skin sensitivity).
Colloidal oats - one of my skin’s favorite soothers. I like to use The INKEY List Oat Cleansing Balm 5 oz/ 150 mL as a 5-10 minute calming mask when my skin’s in red tantrum mode. Also consider First Aid Beauty Wild Oat Hydrating Toner (FAB might’ve recently renamed it) which also contains licorice root, another great skin soothing ingredient. And take a look at Aveeno products; they all contain colloidal oats.
Hydrochlorus acid - the “anti-everything” ingredient: anti-inflammatory, fungal, viral, and bacterial. Good at calming down irritated skin. A very popular option is Tower 28 Beauty SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray 4 oz/ 120 mL , but there are several other very similar products on the market that cost considerably less. I use SkinSmart Antimicrobial Wound Therapy (I usually buy it at Amazon), for instance.
There are other ingredients that can help (green tea, licorice root, allantoin, etc.). Heck, just a cold compress can reduce redness. If your redness is caused by a bad reaction to a product, an OTC antihistamine med can help. My skin is quite reactive/inflammation-prone, to the point where I have to be very gentle when rubbing/applying products on my face and body so as not to cause a red flush or welts.
If you want to try hiding your redness (eh, sometimes I do this, but not always) with makeup, a green color corrector can help immensely. You want one that’ll neutralize your redness, not necessarily cover it up—in other words, your skin shouldn’t look super green after you’ve applied and blended out a green color corrector. A few options are Smashbox Photo Finish Correct Anti-Redness Face Primer 1 oz. / 30 mL, MAKE UP FOR EVER Step 1 Primer Color Corrector - Redness Corrector Redness Corrector , Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Wear Camouflage Color Corrector 4 Green … there are many options out there.
