Adult acne

Help. I'm 37 and I have acne worse now than I ever Had in my teens. What's everyone's miracle product?

Re: Adult acne

HUM Nutrition!!

honestly, i had really bad acne scars but their "daily cleanse" and "red carpet" really helped out. I started to see results in like 2-4 weeks but ofc it depends on each person. highly recommend! it's all-natural, cruelty-free, and it's cheaper than most products i think

First, I'd go see a dermatologist because they have a pretty good toolbox filled with standard tried and true treatments and chances are some combination of those will get your skin under control. As a bonus, most of those meds are generics so they're a lot cheaper and more effective than anything you can buy as a cosmetic. Not saying this will be easy or quick to figure out... I'm on a 10+ year journey as I've gotten older and my acne changed from teenage acne to adult. But having a good dermatologist who you trust is a great place to start. Then the cosmetics just become a support system for your active prescriptions. Right now I'm on a pretty strong retinoid that does all the exfoliating I need, so the rest of my routine is purely focused on hydration. Unfortunately a lot of the stuff I'm into these days isn't sold at Sephora but I am a big fan of the belif true moisturizing bomb cream. In addition to that I use a good, gentle hydrating cleanser, a hyaluronic acid serum, and finish with an oil to lock it all in. Also if no one has mentioned this before, step up the amount of water you're drinking every day! I use the Plant Nanny app to remind me and it helps so much to give your skin the essential hydration it needs.

RE: Adult acne

Everybody is different and depending on the severity, a trip to the dermatologist could be necessary. I've found that less is more when it comes to dealing with acne. I use all tatcha products and they have done wonders! I also use Murads anti-aging acne cleanser for when I do get breakouts. And of course drinking plenty of water and eating healthier plays a huge part.

RE: Adult acne

Prescription Aczone is a miracle. It's a topical gel that goes on before moisturizer. That paired with Sunday Riley UFO has worked wonders for me. Also, the new SR Saturn face mask is incredible. Used as an overnight spot treatment it pretty much eliminated a hormonal cystic pimple just the other day.

Re: Adult acne

As someone that's had super-oily skin (the worst one derm said he'd ever seen), acne,  super-large pores, etc... since about 12 years old, I can relate. I'm 39 now. Nothing worked though, some acne-specific products helped a little. I couldn't even wear eyeshadow, which I love, even with combining eye primers after trying everything in Sephora and Ulta in their own.

I have a new Derm that put me on Accutane. Within the first week, oiliness cleared: I went from constantly powerdering, blotting, reapplying concealer, to having to do none of that. And eyeshadow stays! All day, after working out! Spironolactone is an anti-biotic which means two things: one, can compromise birth control, other feminine issues, and only works while you're on it. (I've taken that in the past). Accutane can be harsh as well and, because of its effects should a woman get pregnant, it's a process to get. But, my current Derm said it's the only thing that can cure acne. She's got beautiful skin and said that's because she took it when she was younger.

Best thing: I can buy anything I want in Sephora because I know it will stay on my face without fighting oily mountains, redness, irritation, etc...

First, Accutane is definitely a miracle worker (I've been through it) but has some major side effects like you mentioned so it's not one to take lightly and obviously must be prescribed by a dermatologist, but even then your skin needs to meet certain criteria (types and severity of acne lesions) for you to even qualify. But it seriously saved my skin. It can be a cute but some people have to do multiple rounds or stay on it long term. My acne came back but in a much milder form after about two years, so now I'm trying to manage it with topicals. Second, antibiotics are a widely prescribed medicine for acne, but spironolactone is actually an androgen blocker which specifically helps with hormonal acne (around the jaw line). Go see a dermatologist if you're thinking about this stuff! They know better than anyone and can look at your skin to see what you need. Often it's a combo. I'm on spironolactone and tretinoin gel at the moment and it's constantly changing as we try new things and see what works and what doesn't.

RE: Adult acne

I was having similar issues a while ago and I have to agree that SPIRONOLACTONE changed everything for me. I am also very cautious about my skincare PTR Rose Stem Cell cleanser, Skinceuticals CE Ferulic, and Boscia Tsubaki Oil (as well as retinol a few times a week), but in the end a prescription from my dermatologist was what finally got rid of my horrible adult acne.

RE: Adult acne

SPIRONOLACTONE!!!!! Go to you derm ASAP. I'm telling you it has changed everything for me. I support it with good products as well (first aid beauty cleanser, Kate Somerville eradikate cleanser, herbavore blue Tansy mask, pixie glow tonic etc) but the spirinolactone has been the best thing ever for me.

RE: Adult acne

There is one product that will put the rest to shame and it is Mario badescu's drying lotion it is $18 at Ulta. Be sure not to shake itbefore use or you won't get the full effects. Now this stuff is the true miracle worker. You dot this stuff on the pimples before bed then you wake up and rinse it off in the morning. Overnight the pimple will shrink so small it'll be easily covered by makeup or will be gone entirely. Forget all these expensive masks and go for the product that teens everywhere including myself swear by.

Re: Adult acne

I recently broke out like crazy, all little tiny bumps on the face. I had to get rid of all my skincare stuff and started using:

- Cleanser: Shu Uemura Ultimate8

- Facial Wash: Shiseido Ibuki Gentle Cleanser used with Foreo

- Benzoyl Peroxide (prescribed by a dr) by itself for a week. Then second week put Benzoyl peroxide on as a mask (leave on for about 15 minutes) lightly wash

- Kiehl's Midnight recovery

- Kiehl's Ultra Facial cream

After a month or so, my husband said my skin felt like baby bum.

RE: Adult acne

Kate Somerville Eradikate spot treatment hands down my number 1 game changer. It is a sulfur based product. Other acne fighting products I use: Peter Thomas Roth sulfur masque, aha/bha cream by skin medica, lag solution from skin ceuticals, retinol by Peter Thomas Roth, Kate Somerville sulfur mask, skin ceuticals blemish + age defense. I could name a few more but I don't have my products with me currently 🙂

Re: Adult acne

Honestly what changed my life was finding out that my skin was dehydrated so that was the reason for my terrible acne I started to use laneige water mask and the fresh rose tonic and my skin changed from day to night! You should go and do a test on your skin and see which type are you, so based on that result you can understand which products suit your skin 🙂

RE: Re: Adult acne

I had the same problem with dehydrated skin. I now use only micellar water to cleanse my face. Anything else tends to dry my skin too much.

The Hum supplements are really good. You have to take them every day religiously and give them a chance. The supplements pretty much started kicking in after I had already used up the first bottle!

I feel this in my SOUL. The Murad aha/bha exfoliating cleanser has been a big key product for me. it has done so much with clearing up breakouts but also with texture !!!

RE: Adult acne

I got a reward sample of Sunday Rileys UFO clarifying face oil because I'm dealing with similar issues. It's been a game changer. I'm definitely investing in a larger bottle because I noticed an immediate improvement in my skin. I'm on my period now which usually comes along with a few blemishes and my skin is clear. I also noticed that it helped a few spots fade on my face (I'm quite pale so I scar easily and I do tend to pick). Plus since it's an oil so you can mix it with other products. I've just been applying a few drops at night. It's really worth a try!

Re: Adult acne

I suffered from horrible adult acne a few years ago.  I started cleansing with oil, used caudalie detox oil at night and a good moisturizer. Dr Matt water drop. Regular facials with led treatment. When it improved I started cleansing with caudalie foaming cleanser and the Boscia black cleanser at night. I was experiencing hormonal acne so I also changed diet.

Re: Adult acne

My miracle product is the entire Kiehl's line! Lol, especially their midnight recovery serum. Sephora has a starter kit with some pretty nice sized samples. I would check it out. If it's sold out, you can find the starter kit on Nordstrom's site as well! Hope this helps love:)

RE: Adult acne

Best product for adult hormonal acne is retinol, you can try the Murad retinol serum or Luna oil, these are for night treatment. In the morning you can do either a vitamin c serum from drunk elephant or a láctica acid from Sunday Riley. It will help To get rid of acne scaring and dark spots with the Murad 50spf because skin gets super sensitive to light. It will clear it within 3 weeks. Also make sure you're doing a double cleanse, removing make up and then cleanser.
