Best Mascara for Styes?

Please help!

I've tried numerous different types of mascaras ranging from drugstore to high-end, but no matter what I use I get styes. Does anyone else get styes from mascara and how do you deal with it?

I'm going to start working full-time soon and would love to find the perfect mascara I can wear daily without causing problems. There must be something out there!

Re: Best Mascara for Styes?

I found that if I use Waterproof Mascara then I  won't get them, but I  do get them if I use Non-Waterproof Mascara.  Stye's suck!

Re: Best Mascara for Styes?

@Kinzand I don't think its your mascara.  My eyes are stye prone as well, but I think it's because I wasn't effectively cleaning that area. I've been using a facial oil cleanser to pre-cleanse and help melt the mascara, makeup, etc before I cleanse. It's really helped.  I haven't had styes in a year.

Re: Best Mascara for Styes?

It could be your mascara or for me it was what I was using to remove my mascara. My oil glands get blocked and I get chalazions and noticed that if I use any eye make up remover with an oil base, that would trigger it.  I stopped using oil based makeup remover on my eyes and use hypochlor (recommended by my optometrist and can buy on amazon) and havenโ€™t had one in almost a year. Hope this helps.

Re: Best Mascara for Styes?

Most mascaras give me styes. I've seen optometrists and they say I'm just sensitive to certain products near and on my eye. For a while my styes kept coming back so often that I had to use eye antibiotics frequently. The only mascara I can consistently use and not get a stye is the Tarte Gifted Amazonian Clay Smart Mascara. I just tried switching to another brand a  ago a couple weeks ago and I have a nice big stye as of yesterday. Back to the Tarte Gifted mascara, which btw is a great mascara!  tarte Giftedโ„ข Amazonian Clay Smart Mascara 0.24 oz/ 7 mL

Re: Best Mascara for Styes?

Hi @Kinzand. I agree with those who recommend seeing an eye doctor. Repeated eye infections are not normal. But I'm not sure the brands of mascara are to blame. Could it be that you're not removing the mascara fully at night before you go to bed? Instead of a new brand of mascara, you might need a better makeup remover.

Also, once you get the eye infection problem in hand, you might want to look at tubing mascaras. They don't have fibers like regular mascaras but actually form tubes around the individual lashes. They don't run or smudge like traditional mascaras either and are water resistant. And they remove with just warm water and a tiny bit of pressure to push the tubes off the lashes. No special removers needed.

Definitely try juice beauty phyto pygment or the rms mascara. Both are organic brands made with friendly ingredients and lengthen/hold a curl pretty well ๐Ÿ™‚

RE: Best Mascara for Styes?

Hey have your tried Physicians Formula ? This is the only one I have found that donโ€™t cause styes, my hair follicles on my eye lashes take an allergic reaction if mascara is left on to long. When I get one the quickest and easiest way to get rid of it is to pull my infected eyelashes out with tweezers.

Re: Best Mascara for Styes?

Yea I would recommend seeing your dr. I have had some eye issues too, and I had to have small procudures and I really haven't had an issue in a while.

Re: Best Mascara for Styes?

@Kinzand Are you sure theyโ€™re styes? Could they be chalazia instead? Maybe you should see an ophthalmologist to get a professional opinion?

Styes are caused by a bacterial infection, so you might try changing your mascara much more often if itโ€™s causing problems. Chalazia are caused when the oil glands get stopped up, so it might help to use hot compresses semi-regularly to keep things from getting blocked up if theyโ€™re chalazia.

Re: Best Mascara for Styes?

I concur with @skcfan's recommendation to get your eyes checked out by your optometrist or PCP if you do not have an optometrist.  If you do have styes then as she mentioned, they are signs of a bacteria infection.  While your eye is healing you should avoid using any makeup on or around the eye to prevent further irritation and infection as well as to prevent new infections.  Any mascara you use while you have a stye you would need to dispose of after the eye has healed so as not to repeat the infection.  Usually it is a good idea to get new brushes or at the very least sanitize the brushes you already have.
