Re: How to keep your nails strong

  • Trim toenails regularly. Keeping them short will minimize the risk of trauma and injury.
  • Wear flip-flops at the pool and in public showers. This reduces the risk of infections caused by a fungus that can get in your toenails.
  • Keep nails clean and dry.
  • Cut nails straight across. Use sharp nail scissors or clippers. Round the nails slightly at the tips for maximum strength.
  • Wear shoes that fit properly. Also, alternate which pair of shoes you wear each day.
  • Keep nails shaped and free of snags by filing with an emery board.
  • Do not bite fingernails or remove the cuticle. Doing so can damage the nail.
  • Do not use your nails as a tool, such as opening pop cans.
  • When toenails are thick and difficult to cut, soak your feet in warm saltwater. Mix one teaspoon of salt per pint of water and soak for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Avoid “digging out” ingrown toenails, especially if they are infected and sore. If you are suffering from an ingrown toenail, see a dermatologist for treatment.

The first step is to file your nails and shape them. The second step is to get some dishwashing liquid and a little Clorox in a bowl and soak your fingernails for 5 minutes before taking them out and patting them dry. After that, you take your clear fingernail polish and paint them, letting them dry under your nails and on top. Finally, you take your top clear fingernail polish and paint on top

Re: How to keep your nails strong

@Anusen  Nails are porous and healthy nails have a coat of protective oil.  Bleaching your nails breaks down both your skin and nail oil barriers and kills the natural biome on your body which leaves your porous nails and skin vulnerable to fungus and bacteria and lacking any good bacteria to fight them off.  Not recommended to use bleach OR dishsoap on your hands or nails at all.  if you need to use either always wear gloves.

A hand mask worn for 20minutes on over dried nails and hands (say from too much washing, exposure to bleach or dish detergent) using jojoba oil, honey and yogurt mixed and applied inside gloves can greatly increase your nail and skin health.

what you’re suggesting would make nail polish stick better and longer as the nail would be more porous, but it’s terrible for the actual nail and for nail strength in the long run.

@sweetpea2sweetp

Soaking your nails in anything, even just plain water, is terrible for them. And a bleach soak? Nope, please don't do this!

The best manicures are completely waterless; water pushes the layers of keratin apart and leads to weaker nails that are prone to breaking and peeling.

Jojoba oil is the best way to maintain healthy, strong nails; it's the oil closest in composition to our own sebum, and the only one the nail itself can absorb, helping nails stay flexible instead of brittle.
