With all the hype about James Charles, Tati and Jeffrey Star, what do you all think? Iโm a fan of Tati but I think she may have taken it a bit too far but I totally get why she was hurt. But Jeffrey Star getting on the band wagon was overload and maybe should have kept his thoughts to private texts. What are your thoughts? Staying neutral, keeping clear or unhappy with one or all three of them?
@LinnyLiz I am no longer subscribed to any of them- there are plenty of smaller gurus who don't engage in problematic behavior or support problematic people that I enjoy and trust more to give real reviews. I used to be a Tati fan, but, whether she felt hurt or not, I am uncomfortable with how she handled the situation. Everyone involved acted unprofessionally and the entire thing ended up coming off as two adults bullying a teenager.
@Kim888 @Thank you and I totally agree I think everyone outside that circle can see what they couldnโt and even if they retract or delete the damage is done. And everyone involved looks bad ๐คทโโ๏ธ
@Kim888 right!! we come to beauty gurus for advice, not drama. if i wanted to see unnecessary bickering/insults/general immaturity, i would watch the news.
@cianni Or go into literally any facebook comments section lol
@LinnyLiz Late to the party but here's my 2 cents: 1. youtube is stale. It's the same boring techniques over and over just a rotation of new products and I think I've hit a point where I'm oversaturated with new makeup. I was thinking about it today -- I have three different colors of Nars concealers and 3 different colors of Tarte concealers, all in the same formula, so I can get that right mix. I can't even buy another foundation/concealer product right now because I'm already swimming in this stuff.
2. Neither Tati nor James Charles ever appealed to me. Tati might be nice but she's boring, and James Charles is... a child.
3. I've heard a little bit about the scuffle from Jezebel. The fact that Jezebel is even covering this is why I rarely read Jezebel anymore. I wish Gawker was still around -- they did a much better job with Jezebel. Anyway, aside from Peter Thiel being satan reincarnate, Jezebel has a point: why is a 30+ woman (Tati) yelling at a 19 year old on social media? You're 30+ years old! Let the kids be kids.
4. Jeffree Star getting involve: didn't he already have a lifetime serving of drama with the Kat Von D feud? Is he really looking for more drama to insert himself into?
@itscarin yess i totally agree about the oversaturation and YT content (which is getting a little repetitive for me at this point). i have so many things that i just *had* to have based on reviews/videos. seeing as im not a beauty influencer and unfortunately dont have the type of lifestyle that i can do a full face like that everyday, i will literally never be able to use all of these products before expiration. i cant even trust the reviews anymore... thank god for the BIC because between influencers trying to stay on PR lists and influenster reviews, it's getting so hard to find honest and reliable reviews on products. i sometimes watch tati because she does give really in-depth reviews, and i watch dr dray because shes a dermatologist who goes through ingredients and such (which i find really helpful because then i can make my own informed decisions about products without having to rely on reviews). aside from that though, ive been trying to stay away from "first impressions" or PR unboxing videos, and stuff like trendmood. everything is starting to look the same LOL
@cianni Honestly, I can't watch the unboxing videos anymore, and I'm getting sick of the posts on instagram that are just product product product posts. I just can't. It's like a makeup hangover.
Even now, I'm looking at Ulta's promotions trying to see if there's anything from Nars I could buy, but I have 3 different colors of radiant creamy concealer, 3 different shades of Tarte Shape Tape, and then an assortment of other foundations and concealers. Buying another thing when I'm in the middle of moving and probably have about a hundred pounds of make up in boxes, some of it which is still new and unopened seems ludicrous.
At this point, there's nothing else I can be sold! If I were to watch youtube, I don't want to see any new products! I'd be more than happy watching someone play with the makeup I already have. Someone should start a 'vintage' makeup channel on youtube where they only use products that have been out for 2 or more years!
@itscarin Yes!!! I miss when a palette would come out and it would be relevant for three or four months. You Tubers would create so much content with that one palette and you learned to get creative with those shades.
I would love a channel to just stick with a product for a month even.
@itscarin yesss i would watch a vintage channel! if i actually am watching beauty YT, it's mostly those pan it project videos because it gives me inspiration to use up things i already have, or those "one palette, three looks" kind of thing. now when i see unboxing vids come up in my suggested videos, i just think that it is such a massive waste of product, packaging and tbh, my time LOL. your concealer collection sounds like my highlighter one. i love them all and dont regret purchasing any of them, but when new ones come out, i cant even bring myself to consider them...just how many shades of champagne one person could possibly need??
@cianni @itscarin I so agree with both of you I am a concealerholic along with eye pallets foundations highlighters ambient lighting powders! Itโs exhausting a vintage channel would be great! I do love watching more if I have the products mentioned but they are always using the โ newโ PR boxes they get making it look better than what we have in our own stash ๐
@Ashleyy1995 Thank you and if you watch makeup on YouTube itโs likely we would have opinions albeit drama or YouTube news and I believed this has died down and will eventually be forgotten but a lesson to those involved and to others that post videos. We are watching to get tips ideas and cause they are entertaining not to have them air laundry ๐
@LinnyLiz Iโve always watched Tati, she delivers relevant info on products Iโm interested in. Much like what @heartsmyface said, I think Iโm not in the right age bracket to care about beauty guru drama. JC and JS arenโt people I watch or follow. I have purchased some JS products because I liked them.
I donโt actually care about their soap opera. I like Tatis thorough review videos, Jeffree stars powder and James Charles has always been irrelevant to me (Iโm probably just old). I donโt care about their โdramaโ or ยดscandalsโ or โteaโ . All I want is information on products, and products that work and if theyโve got perspective and consistently deliver reviews then Iโll watch. @LinnyLiz
@heartsmyface @Thank you for your opinion and I agree with you too ๐
@LinnyLiz I was a casual Tati fan, had heard of james charles and Jefree but had no feelings any which way before this came up. After- I unsubbed from Tati's channel and I will never involve myself with any of their channels or merch.
I thought it was wildly inappropriate for a grown woman to come after a teenager for what was ultimately a personal matter. I thought it was ludicrous that the crux of this was the vitamins and not the alleged behavior, which if true, was genuinely of concern. For anyone who thinks that video was genuine I'll just say I thought it was super convenient that she came out with a video centered around promotion of her vitamins and stirred up all this drama and press which prompted sales of said vitamins through the emotional manipulation of her followers, through which she stood to directly profit. The fact that they all made up within a week bolsters my belief that the whole thing was a gimmick/show to get her followers and money and it disgusts me. For anyone saying there were no ads during that video I would argue that the whole thing was a 43 minute ad for her vitamins- no thank you.
There are many youtubers who provide equally good or better content without the manipulation or drama- I'm just looking for tutorials, techniques, and product reviews. I liked that she tended to review more drugstore brands than some others I watch regularly but there are plenty of others out there if I want a review of something I'm interested in
You are so right! Just like high school and no one wants to return to that! I enjoy and appreciate sincere reviews and think itโs so unnecessary to share their drama.
xo thank you ๐
@LinnyLiz I just honestly don't understand why some youtube personalities feel the need to do this, so unnecessary ๐คทโโ๏ธ
@LinnyLiz Iโve only seen a couple of Jeffreeโs videos, I heard of James just in terms of Morpe, and Iโd never heard of Tati until I saw the drama breakdown on Buzzfeed. I hated high school and it feels so much like high school. There are very serious accusations in it but the focus appears to be vitamins which is just odd. If he did the inappropriate things (Iโm not referring to the vitamins), I hope he was sincere about learning from them. Itโs been weeks since I read anything on it so if anything else has happened since idk. Iโm indifferent about them all; no love, no hate. It is a good lesson for others though and people really need to try to handle things offline. The blowback on something like that truly can ruin or end someoneโs life. People can be incredibly cruel online. Inappropriate behavior needs to be called out but in the appropriate manner.
