Perfume hunting

As a kid, do you guys remember the smell of opening your mom’s makeup drawer to snoop around her makeup? Makeup back then had this sweet, powdery, fruity, vanilla scent. I can’t believe I’m just now finding out that there are perfumes that smell like powdery makeup/lipstick!! Any good perfume recommendations that smell like  it?💄

Re: Perfume hunting

@labdf @itsfi  Victoria at Bois de Jasmin (highly recommend her blog if you are interested in learning about perfume!) has a post about "lipstick perfumes" in which she recommends some of those itsfi mentioned as well as some others. I can't link to it but if you search "Bois de Jasmin Red Lipstick Fragrances" it should come up!

Re: Perfume hunting

@caitbird, at first I thought Bois de Jasmin was an actual fragrance. That sounds like a great fragrance resource.

Re: Perfume hunting

@itsfi  that does sound like a lovely fragrance! Her blog is an amazing resource, I've learned so much from her.

Re: Perfume hunting

@labdf @itsfi

Beyond the lipstick perfumes mentioned I can suggest the powdery aspect.

Powdery scents I can suggest are Lancome's Rose Extraodinaire, Dolce & Gabanna Dolce Violet, Guerlain's L'Huere Bleu, Guerlain's Insolence maybe. Love don't be Shy by Kilian isn't super powdery but it has an orangy cream smell. Kilian also scents their lipsticks with it. Givenchy Rouge Ultime is quite golden powder. I get no tobacco etc out of it. I would suggest testing that one (all of them really) as some people are getting the tobacco, I just get a bright, warm powder the entire day.

Re: Perfume hunting

I'm making a note to try Love Don't Be Shy again @Margalee - the first thing that comes to mind for me is marshmallow. I'd be interested in an orange cream scent - is that something you pick up in the beginning? Dry down? Middle? I'm intrigued.

Re: Perfume hunting

@itsfi They are both darkening a bit really but the older one is definitely more floral. And they have changed from when I first purchased them. Because I remember them at first more gooshie sweet, less floral. More of that oddness that Twilly has. They still have that but not quite so much. There have been a couple times I sprayed it and have thought, huh, that's strange...  I do really like Love Don't be Shy. It's an easy wear.

Re: Perfume hunting

@itsfi sorry to respond so late. I've heard more than one or two people say it smells like Middle Eastern orange ice cream treat. Kind of orangy, kind of perfumey. I can imagine that. LDBS is one of those strange, hard to really descibe for me. Much like Hermes Twilly. My first LDBS is now the color of almost blood orange. It's very creamy powder, fragrant light flowers and lightly citrus at the opening. Not citrus like D&G Light Blue but more like chewable vitamin C tablets. It reminds me slightly of that prickly pear mask for hair but doesn't go into the diaper scent the prickly pear hair mask does. Thankfully. Just that same weird scent. But at the opening it's very creamy as in milk added to something tart at the opening. It's almost that powdery chewy sweet tart fragrance after some of the creaminess goes away. Somewhat baby aspirin orange with that. Not so strong as orange baby aspirin. Then more orangy creamy and a bit marshmallowy. Powdery throughout. I will say my newer travel size is a lot more marshmallow in what I would say the late opening. And orange cream. And much less of the floraly scent in the opening. Possibly Princess is so marshmallowy that I miss a lot of it in LDBS. Floraly scent more in the mid notes but not as strong as the older one. I stick by orange cream, hah hah I have had ice cream and frozen confections that are a bit perfumey so I can imagine this smells like Middle Eastern orange treats.

Re: Perfume hunting

@labdf, for me, fragrances containing iris or violet lend themselves to that powdery scent (and from what I've read, many of the older lipsticks used violet in their formulations), depending on what other notes and concentration of the notes are included in the fragrance. Off the top of my head, these fragrances give me that powdery makeup / lipstick scent -

Maison Margiela Lipstick On (not sure if this is still available)

Juliette Has a Gun Lipstick Fever Eau de Parfum

Frederic Malle makes a scent and the name is escaping me at the moment ...

edited to add - ahhh, Frederic Malle Lipstick Rose

Tagging some of the fragrance aficionados here who may be able to provide more recommendations - @pocketvenus @Samtian @sister13 @LCResz @blackkitty2014 @txcatx @Margalee @caitbird @Titian06

I'll tag more folks as I think of them

Re: Perfume hunting

@itsfi Lipstick On is one of my top favorite scents! When I wear it I can't stop smelling myself. You hit the nail on the head with powdery scents.

Re: Perfume hunting

Ahhh, I didn't know it's one of your top favorite scents @Samtian! Always something to be learned on the BIC! Pretty scent, and pretty packaging - I like the aesthetic of the JHAG ombre / gradient bottles.

Re: Perfume hunting

@itsfi They do have pretty bottles! 56 (Stevie says hi), I need to try that Juliette one still lol. Someday I'll get a travel or full size of the Fredrick. I have enough perfume to last centuries, but I also still need to try them all, there is no winning!

Re: Perfume hunting

Yes the Frederic Malle Lipstick Rose is a great one (though so pricey!)

White Shoulders is a scent that is very memorable from back in the day and I think is still available.

I will always remember my grandmothers Estée Lauder Youth Dew dusting powder. I’ll report back if I think of others.

Re: Perfume hunting

@sister13, Youth Dew sounds so familiar ... 🤔  Ahhh, I remember the first time I smelled Lipstick Rose. I thought "oooouh, what is this?" Then I became aware of the price tag and thought "hmmm...maybe I don't want to know anymore about this." 😅 Such a lovely fragrance. 😍

Re: Perfume hunting

Oh and Youth Dew wa famous because Estée Lauder was trying to get into a big department store but they kept rejecting her (or wouldn’t talk to her, I can’t remember). So she “accidentally” dropped/spilled a bottle of Youth Dew in the lobby and all the women were asking about the scent so they ended up taking her on and selling it. @itsfi

Re: Perfume hunting

I know! I fell in love with Carnal Flower when I first smelled it in France and then finally got a bottle many years later as a celebration after a raise. It’s a tuberose bomb and I still love it but a little sure goes a long way! @itsfi

Youth Dew was a fragrance and dusting powder, they still sell it! The fragrance is pretty awful to my nose, though maybe just old fashioned, the description sounds like I would like it though , lol.

They had a variation Youth Dew Amber Nude a while back and I still have a mini of that that I liked. Strong and heavy amber and powder.

Re: Perfume hunting

@labdf Hm, I don’t know if I can come up with something exactly like how you describe, but a scent that always reminds me of my mom’s makeup collection growing up is CLINIQUE Clinique Happy 1 oz She’s never really been a fragrance person, but pretty much used Clinique products exclusively for 30 years. Oftentimes, she’d get a small bottle of Happy in her GWPs.
