Guerlain Recommendations

I am on my second bottle of Shalimar and I adore it. My fiancé gifted me a bottle of L’heure Bleue at Christmas and it has become a close second in my faves. Eager to add more of these little gems to my collection I blind bought Mitsouko and was sad to discover I hated it! I really want to continue my collection. Any recommendations on some I might like? I don’t like Mon Guerlain.. it isn’t that it doesn’t smell nice.. it just smells like 10 other perfumes out there.

It sounds like you enjoy classical styles of perfumes, in this case, orientals. If you haven't tried Guerlain's Jicky or some of its other older fragrances, I'd recommend testing them. Agreed that Mon Guerlain is generic; the house has not released any stunners in quite some time.

Other suggestions

  • YSL's Opium, a classic, spicy oriental
  • Frédéric Malle's Superstitious, a modern aldehydic floral fragrance with classical references
  • You might like the Roja Dove house which can have a vintage style and captures the kind of rich opulence of the old Guerlains. Also, I must warn you, they are frightfully expensive
  • Try some of the Kilians? They are modern in style, but very beautiful and feminine

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond! I haven’t tried Jicky yet.. I am thinking of buying a bottle soon. If I don’t like it, I’ll probably give it to my daughter. She loves the Mitsouko because it reminds her of Aromatics Elixir by Clinique, without the “horrid patchouli” that bothers her after a while. I used to love YSL’s Opium and have a bottle of the Black Opium. I’d love to try Après L’Ondée by Guerlain, but it’s not easy to find. I did stumble upon a discovery set by Kilian, that won’t break the bank but you’re right.. the other recommendations you listed ARE frightfully expensive! 😄

You're most welcome! I'm afraid you have expensive taste lol. The Serge Lutens are somewhat less pricey. They can be rich and lush, often with a kind of spicy stewed fruit accord. Perhaps some of the orientals like Ambre Sultan might appeal? Dior's Poison is another one that slipped my mind, a classic floral oriental that's more affordable than the Malle and Killian. Roja Dove is just beyond in terms of price point. I have tried his Diaghilev, his homage to Mitsouko, and it is truly stunning but I could never justify buying a full bottle!!
