How much should I bring to Sephora? New to makeup!

Hi!

I've never worn makeup before, but as of recently I've been more and more eager to start wearing it! I wanted to go to a Sephora near me and get a match-up, but I'm not sure what products would be great for beginners and how much money to even bring for everything (makeup + necessary brushes). From Youtube videos I see primer, foundation, concealer, blush, and setting spray/power being the main essentials but is that all or am I missing anything? I just don't want to walk in there and look like a lost puppy lol..

Any advice/answers?

I would suggest asking about foundations and concealers. Those are the hardest things to match and work with, maybe walking away with samples and tips if they aren't busy. With it being the holidays, you might be able to score a great kit with things to try, like the favorites kits. Mini products can still last forever and would give you a chance to play. And don't discount drugstore products. As a beginner you don't need anything super pigmented to learn where to apply your eyeshadows or to figure out what colors look good good and what might make you look sick. You don't need to spend $40 on a brush either. You can buy some very inexpensively and they work great. Splurge once you know what you need in a brush if you'd like.

What I would do if I wear you and I wanted to invest in something from Sephora 1. Book a makeup appointment it’s a $50 minimum purchase the day of ur appointment, let them know in advance that you would like it to be more of a learning/demo appointment ask for an experienced artist if you choose to go through Sephora 2. For your purchase buy an eye shadow palette you love! There’s so many options especially holiday collection too faced has some really good ones and the quality is amazing! I’m normally not a huge too faced fan but they totally too the cake on their holiday shadows! ( I’ll attach a picture on a client I used them on) 3. Ask your artist to show you how to work with whatever your buying so you know how to use it, ask to record the lesson, and write everything out if ur helps after 4. Take care of your skin! Beautiful makeup starts with beautiful skin! Cleanse, tone, treat, Moisturize ( under eye cream and with face cream they aren’t the same! ) get samples of the skin care and try and find some less expensive alternatives 5. Sephora collection is very good quality! Specifically foundations, powders, lips, skin care, primers I would stay away from their eyeshadows unless you have a chance to test in store! 6. Brushes are key! With a good brush you can make anything work! I really like morphe it’s affordable and good quality. I love the M441, M443, and the M573! Also there’s a brand called “Jessup” AHHHHHFREAKINGMAZING! and cheap! They them on amazon and a website called AliExpress ( yes it’s a legit site and they’re real I’ve ordered from them) there’s ladies there also for a few dollars you can at least 6 pairs 7. Don’t knock E.L.F let me tell you girl as a Sephora pc I can tell you there is so amazing drug store stuff! Some of it I prefer over my expensive stuff! • NYX glitter glue •Elf foundations •Elf Highlight •Italia liners • Maybeline foundation • real techniques sponges! •wet and wild •Sonia kashuk Ask questions! And practice makes perfect! 💓 if you have any questions or need any help my insta gram is @mel.keup just dm me and I can help you good luck doll!

I would say to save coins purchase drug store products. Then once you got used to applying makeup buy something like those products at Sephora. I sometimes ask for samples to try stuff out or even apply a product in the mall go shopping and test how it wears before buying.

RE: How much should I bring to Sephora? New to makeup!

To start I think you need to buy more drug store brands or indie brands until you get comfortable with makeup. Unfortunately although Sephora products are amazing they are expensive. So get comfortable with makeup first! Another good way it to start with a subscription box like Play by Sephora,Birchbox or Ipsy to start off. Also Colourpop is a really good brand to start off experimenting and not blow your budget. Honestly I’m comfortable with makeup now and my favorite brand is Colourpop their range of products is amazing.!!

Elf makes great makeup brushes! Foundation I would do the match in store at sephora, and you can sign up for their beauty consultation with $50 purchase so they can help you pick out everything. Colourpop has great eye shadows for cheap as well.

Majority of the products sephora sells are expensive, and if you'd like to purchase all the things you need in one trip such as: foundation, mascara, blush, concealer, powder, eyeshadow, etc. you may need a couple hundred dollars ☺️💰💰

Re: How much should I bring to Sephora? New to makeup!

@Anonymous, like others said, don't be afraid od mixing high-end and drugstore. ELF has some nice brushes and lipsticks that are super cheap. If you order online, they have great sales once in a while and they have lots of gifts with purchase. Sephora also tends to have makeup brush sets in the sale section thst are affordable.

If your skin matches the Sephora Favourites Superstars kit, I recommend you get that for your basics like primer, powder, a beauty blender, a product for your brows, a setting spray and more. It's also under 100$ which is amazing.

For eyeshadows, I recommend you check out Colourpop's website. The Yes, Please and She palettes are beautiful and easy to work with. The Super Shock shadow kits are also of good value.

Lastly, for Blush, Tarte has a Big Blush palette for the holidays that is an amazing value and you get so many colours to play with. It'll help you decide what shades you like on your skin tone before choosing full size from Tarte or other brands.

RE: How much should I bring to Sephora? New to makeup!

I'd say the products you mentioned plus brushes you are looking at $200-250 or so before tax (this is obviously a rough estimate and if you pick expensive items it could be more). While I understand the need to keep costs low, when you're just starting, I also think if it's in your budget to start with some nice quality items as for the most part they blend better, last longer, and are less frustrating for a beginner to work with. I'll put some of my favs for both affordable and higher end: starting w higher end: primer- porefessional if you're oily, hourglass mineral primer if dry. (I think it's ok to skip this, use a moisturizer, and spend the money on more fun things) foundation: make up forever HD foundation, the stick is easy to apply but the liquid is nice too. Really nice for a beginner. Concealer: NARS creamy concealer. Blush: make up forever or Becca make nice blushes. Setting spray: urban decay all-nighter, powder: make up forever HD loose setting powder. Brushes/tools: I'd get a beauty blender plus one of the kits that has eyes and face brushes. Wash them regularly... I use dish or hand soap but they do sell cleansers. Affordable products: primer: NYX primer foundation: Rimmel match perfection, concealer: rimmel match perfection concealer. Blush: I don't really use drug store blush, I love the physicians formula butter bronzer though. Setting: RCMA powder on Amazon is the best, the price is usually 12 for 3oz (most powder is sold by the ounce) Just some suggestions, hope it helps!

Go on amazon..you can get a good set of starter brushes for under 20. Then start with some e.l.f. products from target. Also don't be afraid to ask for samples of different products before buying a full size!

Re: How much should I bring to Sephora? New to makeup!

I think that was a really good answer. BUT I think you should always start out with a set of good brushes. They are an investment, but you can tell a difference when applying if you are using the cheap sponge stick to apply eyeshadow.  My gosh you’d end up looking like it was Halloween all over again. I love love my Sephora Pantone (BLUE GREEN)  brushes, and I have all of the Tarte ones I can’t live without. They are a couple of years old, but I take care of them. Cleaning them properly and storing them neatly. Good Luck

Re: How much should I bring to Sephora? New to makeup!

honestly, if you're just starting, drugstore products (Maybelline, NYX and elf are good brands) are best to start with then as you get better, you start to transition to high end products.

RE: How much should I bring to Sephora? New to makeup!

Don’t spend too much as u are new so u might need to do some experiments before investing heavy money .

Re: How much should I bring to Sephora? New to makeup!

You can really spend a lot when first starting out because you are looking for the full gamut - primer, foundation, powder, eye shadow, contour, mascara, lip products, skin care, cleansing just to name a few. Don't be over-whelmed. Browse the site and look at colors that appeal to you, styles that appeal to you. Do you like a natural look, or a bold look? This will also change the products you might want to get. For me, I like focusing on eyes, and lips. I feel lashes are a must, if not at least a good mascara. Once you look at the website, and see the prices of some of the items you are at least interested in, then you will have an idea of how much you might spend. Don't feel you have to buy everything at once. Pick up one or two items a week or every two weeks. Feel free to ask me more questions. Good luck!
