Drugstore vs sephora

I think it's good to get: Foundation or tinted moisterizer, skin care, brow products and eyeshadow at Sephora. And then I get: concealer and miscellar water from the drugstore, things I use up faster.

Re: Drugstore vs sephora

As you can already tell, it is different for everyone, I think we tend to spend more on the products or steps we like the most, here are some recommendations:

Foundation: If you are oily, too faced's peach perfect is awesome, also laura mercier silk creme and NARS sheer glow are amazing options.

Concealer: Laura Mercier Flawless fusion and Too Faced BTW sculpting concealer/ Colourpop concealer and Maybelline fit me and age rewind.

Powder: the Laura Mercier translucent loose

Bronzer: Physician's formula butter bronzer is so soft and buttery.

Blush: High end blushes usually last longer on the skin but I also love max factor creme puff blushes.

Eyeliner: wet and wild has worked surprisingly well on me

Mascara: Love the waterproof version of Too Faced BTS, also Lancome Monsieur Big is the best I've tried.

Lipstick: I love MAC lipstick but since you can't get them in Sephora, BITE beauty, NARS, Marc Jacobs and Estee Lauder are the ones I recommend for creaminess and longewear

Re: Drugstore vs sephora

I feel like it's okay to cut corners with some products, but I'm pretty serious about buying quality foundation. I'm sure there are drug store foundations that work great for some people, but I could never find one. I'm cheap about some things, but I have no issues with shelling out the cash for high end foundation. Also, if you go to Sephora, they can help match you so you end up with the correct shade. I guess basically I feel like your foundation is the base for all the rest of your makeup--if that doesn't look good, nothing else is going to look good either.

Re: Drugstore vs sephora

I think there's a lot of quality to be found at the drugstore (plus Ulta if you want to include mid-range brands like Juvia's Place and Colour Pop). I don't have many hard and fast rules, but I buy foundation from Sephora 100% of the time because I have tricky skin and found my holy grail product. Eyeshadow palettes, lipsticks, and concealer I generally buy at Sephora just because I haven't found drugstore equivalents that I love, and almost everything else is drugstore. My drugstore picks:

Mascara: CoverGirl Clump Crusher or LashBlast Volume, L'Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise, Essence Lash Princess

Eyeliner: NYX Epic Ink (liquid/pen), Maybelline Master Precise Skinny, Essence Extreme Lasting Eye Pencil

Concealer: Maybelline Fit Me or Age Rewind (I usually buy NARS or Too Faced, but these are decent options)

Lipstick: L'Oreal Colour Riche Shine (they don't compare to my favorites, like NARS Audacious or Bobbi Brown, but it's the best drugstore line I've found)

Lip Liner: Rimmel Lasting Finish or Exaggerate

Blush: Milani Rose Powder or Baked Blush

Bronzer: Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer

Highlight: Maybelline Master Chrome, Essence Pure Nude

Brows: L'Oreal Brow Stylist Definer, Essence Make Me Brow

Re: Drugstore vs sephora

I always think that if you can get a good product cheap that is great, I don't think it is worth spending a lot on highlighter, mascara or setting powder but I did include different options that I like both high end and drug store.

Highlighter

  • Drug Store: Physicians Formula (Butter Highlighter)

Lip gloss

  • Drug Store: Hard Candy (Lip Plumping Serum)
  • High End: Huda Beauty (Lip Strobe)

Eyeshadow Primer

  • Drug Store: Hard Candy (Eyes The Limit Eyeshadow Primer)

Mascara

  • Drug Store: L'Oréal (Lash Paradise)
  • High End: Smashbox (Full Exposure)

Blush

  • Drug Store: Maybelline (Fit Me)
  • High End: Tarte (Amazonian Clay 12-hour Blush)

Setting Powder

  • Drug Store: Airspun (Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder)

Eyeshadow

  • Drug Store: Maybelline (City Mini palette in Rooftop Bronzes)
  • High End: Smashbox (Covershot palettes)
  • High End: Urban Decay (Born to Run)

Liquid Lips (mostly budge proof)

  • Drug Store: Maybelline (Superstay Matte Ink)
  • High End: Smashbox (Always on Matte Liquid Lipstick)

RE: Drugstore vs sephora

I absolutely love the mascara primer and mascara from the drugstore (L’Oreal). In fact, I love it more than most expensive high end mascaras. I’ve also found that lipsticks are also great from the drugstore. But that’s all I buy when it comes to makeup from the drugstore. The advantage of buying foundation at Sephora vs a drugstore is that you get an exact color match & you’re able to try it on before buying. At the drugstore, it’s a hit or miss. You’ll get the bang for your buck & it’ll save you a lot of time & frustration by buying high quality, pigmented eyeshadow palettes. Which that means buying them at Sephora and not at the drugstore. A highly pigmented eyeshadow palette will last you a long time because you’ll need to use very little each time you wear eyeshadow. So a palette may cost you $40 or $50 but you’ll use it for 1 to 2 years. So it’s definitely worth it.

the fit me foundation is amazing! (for me at least) and its drugstore. Eyeshadows and contour at sephora. I've tried so many drugstore contour items and they've all just sucked, wouldn't blend at all.

Re: Drugstore vs sephora

@Emily606 For makeup, you really can find some good quality products at the drugstore that are very comparable if not superior to some of the items carried at Sephora. In my case, most base and face products that I use and work with (aka skincare, primer, foundation, concealer, etc) are more mid/higher end that I can purchase at Sephora. As far as everything else, I have found some really good eye, lip and check items at the drugstore that are fairly affordable and would recommend checking out. Each brand has hits and misses but some affordable drugstore brands  I would suggest are: BH cosmetics, Juvia’s place, ELF, and NYX.

RE: Drugstore vs sephora

The only makeup product I regularly purchase at the drug store is mascara. On the other hand, I purchase MOST of my skincare at the drugstore.

Re: Drugstore vs sephora

@Emily606 I think everyone is different, but here's what I do.  Mascara has always been drugstore for me (first Maybelline, then NYC, now Essence).  As for eyeliners, I use both: Revlon, Sephora, Tarte, MUFE, etc.  I personally only use prestige eyeshadow and primers.  Hope this helps 🙂

Drugstore vs sephora

My advice, don't waste money on high street mascara. Get it at the drug store. I've tried sooo many high street mascaras and they all have fallout, smudge, clump. I buy the purple coloured tube of Essence mascara at the drug store for 3.99 lol. It doesn't smudge or flake for about 6 to 8 hours. Don't spend $$ on mascara. That's my number one drugstore recommend. Dooo spend good money on eyeshadow and eye-primers. Also at the drug store I recommend Marcelle double ended liquid line pen. Very good, only about 17 dollars compared to some high end liners which have terrible tips. Marcelle double end is easy to use. My favorite high end khol pencil is Lancome but the marcelle one is good. Their foundation isn't too bad but it's barely medium coverage and I don't find it buildable. Definitely shell out for the high end foundations. You don't even have to spend over 50 to get a good one. I hope this was helpful!

Re: Drugstore vs sephora

And see, I'm the exact opposite, @thefrogqueen, haha! I have tried so many drugstore mascaras but none of them come close to Lancome. All the others smudge and wear off throughout the day. However, L'Oreal foundation works better for me than the vast majority of higher ends ones! It's really all a crap shoot on what will be best for you, @Emily606

Lancome is probably the best option of the high street br...

Lancome is probably the best option of the high street brands I do agree there but it's not much better than the purple 3.99 essence brand in my opinion. The Lancome lash primer is semi helpful but not good enough for me to spend that much money.

Re: Lancome is probably the best option of the high street br...

Yeah, I've tried the Essence and it's just not even close for me. It would be nice to have a cheaper option, but with mascara, Lancome it is! Their lash primer is also holy grail for me as it's an absolute need for staying power regardless of what mascara I'm using.
