Moisturizer=skin irritation and redness

I am 40 and for the past 3 years every moisturizer I use makes my skin look red and irritated. I can use Dr Jart Tiger Grass Cream at night, but I need something to wear under makeup. I tried Smashbox facial oil too and it makes my skin very red and irritated. Any suggestions?

RE: Moisturizer=skin irritation and redness

I have incredibly severe eczema so pretty much anything makes my skin burn and red, especially on my face. But the boscia tsubaki moisturizer is amazing for my face. I also get Cetaphil moisturizer in the big jar from Walmart; it’s thick and great for right after showering or cleansing.

Moisturizer=skin irritation and redness

Honestly I find that most products irritate my skin as well, especially many of those marketed as "natural" since they often contain essential oils. I had tried so many moisturizers too, to no avail. Late last year I began using Drunk Elephant products and pretty much cut out all others (but retinol) and this has really helped. For hydration, I highly recommend the Lala Retro Whipped Cream and the marula oil. They're definitely pricy but so worth it. I have dry skin so these really work for me. I know some others with oilier skin, not so much. I just really appreciate that this line doesn't incorporate fragrance. Highly recommend. Good luck!

Also, FWIW, I have used the Dr. Jart Tiger Grass Repair Cream too and noticed some improvement but I know this product contains some citrus oils, which can be irritating and make your skin more photosensitive. My redness was nowhere near gone and there was the dilemma you mention about not really being able to use it under makeup. Personally I think Lala is too thick for under makeup wear too but a couple drops of marula oil seems perfect for me!

Honestly,  at the end of the day, you may be best off with plain old Aveeno moisturizer.   My husband gets ezcema from certain ingredients;  he uses Aveeno on his face and it works well for him.

@CrystalMichelle That sounds miserable! I think you may want to try SkinCeuticals’ Phyto Corrective Gel as your daytime and nighttime moisturizer. It is simply amazing for redness. But, I also think it’s important that you visit a cosmetic dermatologist to get to the bottom of what is causing you so much irritation for the last three years!

Re: Moisturizer=skin irritation and redness

I saw a Dermatologist he said he believes the causes are due to me having had an Endometrial Ablasion (the excess hormones don’t get expelled) and also it’s common in women my age.

Oh, that doesn’t sound fun at all 😪 I really hope you find something that works for you! @CrystalMichelle

RE: Moisturizer=skin irritation and redness

For me I use Burt’s Bee night time moisturizer day and night it works well when applied in the morning allowing it to dry a little then I can apply my primer and foundation ect with no issues, moisturizes very well and it may help you with your redness since they make sensitive skin moisturizer as well, for Sephora products I’ve found that Peter Thomas Roth Hungarian Moisturizer works very well and is very hydrating and hasn’t irritated my skin or left it red

Re: RE: Moisturizer=skin irritation and redness

I’ll try the Burt Bee one, thank you! I got a trial of the Peter Thomas Roth Hungarian (I use PTR face wash and masks) but my skin was very irritated. I’ve only tried it once
