wrong item returned and refund denied

I made a sephora order and when it came, it was not the item i ordered. So i returned the wrong item and received a email that said the refund is denied because the box had the wrong item. But that is why i made the return in the first place and i even had that written as the reason for the return. I don't understand why i did not receive a refund if i returned the item?
