returned a gift, will the person know?

I returned an item I received as a gift. she is my friend so the associate looked up her phone number that I provided. the associate said she would not know I returned this item. is this true?

this was in store. like I said, the associate looked up the gift giver's number I provided. she said they would not know but the gift giver's name was on the return receipt. the associate did not sound convincing either. so again, will the gift giver know I returned the item?
