Why was my order canceled?

I recently placed an order for two items on Dec. 31 and I checked their status to see that it was canceled and that it was due to "unsuccessful authorization". I have no clue what that means, could it be my credit card or something to do with the shipping? Please let me know what can be done about this since I have been given no explanation as to why this happened.
