What's with Sephora THROWING OUT any items returned? (yes, into the TRASH)

I was in store last night, to return an item that came in a container which was inside a box. I had purchased it, and got home and simply realized it was more expensive than I should have paid and immediately said I need to be responsible and return the item. When I was returning it last night, the sales associate put a damage sticker on it. I told him I had not even opened the product. It had simply laid inside the bag at my house. He said, "oh, we throw out all returns...."... I was horrified!! He said "ohhhh well were all pretty upset at first but then we realized whatever it's not our money...we've been doing it since May". I cannot believe this. I hadn't touched this item more than ANY item would be touched within the store. Sephora, this is not a good covid policy. This is wasteful and GROSS. You're too lazy to sanitize items? Makes me feel really good to think you'll take $70 for an item from me, and then in another breath just see the item as worthy for the trash. Do you understand the resources going into producing products, the damage done to the environment? I am SO grossed out, and will be telling every single person I know about this, as this is the most wasteful, laziest policy I have heard of, and completely changes my view of Sephora as a company.
