Unused gift card showing zero balance

I just went to use the $75 gift card that a friend gave me for my birthday a few months ago. First when I went to scratch the PIN number it scratched half of it off because it was printed on the sticked and not the card. So I wasted a ton of time on the phone and was told I had to go into the store. I go in and it’s half empty but I find some of the items and try to check out and they said I have a zero dollar balance. It has never been used and is now worthless. Customer service won’t help me and said I had to try to get my friend to contact the bank. Obviously this has been happening a ton, based on the posts here. I can’t believe Sephora won’t stand by their products or help any of us. It’s pathetic.
