The gift card issue

I got a gift card from my friend at my bachelorette party. A month later, I decided to use it online, but I couldn't because my card had four digits PIN instead of 8. So I just went to a store to use it in the store, but the cashier said that the card had no money on it. I called the support number to check the balance but was told the card was inactive. I've seen a few posts already with the same problem. Apparently, it is a problem from the Sephora end.

 

Obviously, I won't tell my friend about it. But the question is still open—what did my friend pay for? For just a piece of plastic?
