Store credit for in-store purchase - why and what do I do now?

Hi, 

Today I had my husband return some New Year's gifts to Sephora store; it was a in-store purchase, obviously within 60 days from purchase, and I'm pretty sure used up all my gift cards for original payment. And yet my dear husband came back with STORE CREDIT! WHY was he not offered an actual Gift Card? He says "I was told its because of the amount - it's a little over $1000 total"... So now I'm dead stuck with an online order of stuff I want but cannot buy, because its not available in any "local" stores, and I can't use store credit to shop online! Seriously, who came up with this policy??! I can't even buy a Sephora gift card using store credit! Like WHY, I can't use Sephora Gift Card anywhere else anyways, it is not like I'm pulling money away from the store! Besides, reimbursing my purchase with store credit is a violation of a return policy, yet I've called Customer Service and was told "since it was purchased in store and returned to store - there's nothing we can do". Come again? Sephora.com and Sephora stores are under separate management?! So now I need to go talk to store manager, least we forget that store is like an hour away (yes, we have a local store, but my husband just had to google one up that's close to his work!).... 

 

Um... help, anyone?
