Sephora spain return

Hi, I tried to return untouched palette in the box and with a receipt today, and it was refused because the packaging was slightly damaged, which makes sense when you open something! I do not understand the return policy when you have to look after package so you can return the product. Especially in the store where you display and use hundreds of products monthly. Is it even allowed by law?
