Sephora gift card empty

I received a physical gift card for my birthday. The giver didn’t specify what was the amount but I think it’s something between $50 and $100. When I went to the store, the gift card showed $0 balance. When I called, the customer service wasn’t helpful at all. I know it’s a very common for Sephora gift cards to be drained somehow. But it still makes me feel like I was rubbed of off my gift. Any ideas how to get my birthday present back?
