Sephora @ Kohls vs. Sephora

The closest free standing Sephora is 30 mins away, yet my Kohl's with Sephora is 4 mins away.  Now tell me why I could not exchange my NARS Blush at a Kohl's location?  I was told I am not allowed to do any transactions at the Kohl's Sephora because I purchased at Sephora.com and need to go to an actual Sephora store. How is that possible is the name is the same and all I wanted to do was a simple exchange.  Then I asked if I could just exchange because I received it as a gift and said no because he knew I ordered it online.  Like come on man.  I then explained that I didn't want to drive 30 mins when he could just have done it.  The item was never used, only opened and it was the wrong color. I understand that the employees don't make the rules. But why is it associated with Sephora if it really isn't? Please someone make it make sense! Anyone with insight would be greatly appreciated. TIA
