Sephora JCPenney returns

Does anyone know what the rules are around returning a purchase made at a freestanding Sephora store to a Sephora inside JCP? The nearest Sephora to me is one inside JCP, and I tried today to return an item I bought at a freestanding Sephora, and they told me I had to take it back to the original store (over 2 hours from where I live!) I called the Sephora customer line to try to figure out whether this is the case since it isn't totally clear on the website, and the person who answered said she wasn't "totally familiar" with the return policy, and then said "well, if they told you you have to go back to the original store, that's what you have to do." I'm not too familiar with Sephora returns, I'm practically a makeup hoarder and keep just about everything I buy, but this doesn't sound like it could possibly be the case?
