Rouge Status lost

In early December I had made an online purchase and called customer service to see how many points away I was from keeping my rouge status.  I was told I was 473 points away and I didn’t worry because Christmas was right around the corner.  I made $486.00 worth of purchases between December 6 and December 23.

 

Today we visited a Sephora and when I went to claim my birthday gift as a rouge I was told I was only a VIB.  I called customer service and was told I missed keeping my Rouge status because the $130 dollars worth of gift certificates I had purchased did not count towards my points.

 

Can someone help me understand how I spent $130 and it doesn’t count towards my account therefore forfeiting my rouge status for the first time in almost 3 years.
