Returning item to JCP Sephora

I purchased foundation from a stand alone Sephora but it didn’t work. The closest Sephora to me is a JCP Sephora, I went in and tried to exchange it and the associate said the upc number was not coming up when she scanned the product and that bc they didn’t carry that brand (hourglass) I had to return it at the original stand alone location. Is this so? I thought you could return any item purchased at a  Sephora to ANY Sephora, stand alone or JCP?

I called the Sephora at JCPenney near me in South Jordan, Utah and I was told they cannot take freestanding Sephora returns. Can we return Sephora items at Sephora JCPenney locations or not? Thank you.

Purchases made at our freestanding Sephora stores can no longer be returned to our Sephora inside JCPenney locations. I'm sorry about that!

How about vice versa? I purchased an item from a Sephora inside JCPenney and tried to return it to a free standing Sephora. It was unopened and Sephora brand. I wasn't even seeking a refund, only to exchange. The associate said that since she couldn't see it in my account when she scanned it, I couldn't return it and had to go to JCPenney.
