Return with receipt onto gift card

I recently purchased a foundation that just isn't working for me, but the closest Sephora is inside a JCPenney, so their stock is a bit limited. It hasn't been a week since the initial purchase, minimal use of the foundation stick, and I did keep the receipt with box (also shows on my purchase history with VIB, if that matters). Last time I made a return, I think it was a little over a year ago, I had the receipt but was told I could only get the return on the original payment method or in store credit. Is that still the case? The foundation was a gift, so it wasn't my card used on the purchase, and I would like to use a gift card to order a different foundation online, instead.
